UAE planting calendar: what to plant each month

In the UAE the planting season runs from October to April. Plant trees, hedges, shrubs and ground cover in those cool months so roots establish before summer; winter crops and annuals (tomatoes, herbs, petunias) go in from October to March. From May to September, when Dubai's average daily high sits between 38 and 42°C, keep new planting indoors.

Dubai's year in temperature

The UAE calendar runs opposite to Europe's: the cool months are the growing season and summer is something plants survive. The bars show the average daily low to high for each month.

Dubai average daily high and low temperature by monthRange bars from the average daily low to the average daily high for each month. October to April is shaded as the planting season; May to September, when highs reach 38 to 42°C, is shaded as the survival season.Planting seasonSurvival season (May–Sep)Planting season15°20°25°30°35°40°45°35°C+: tomato flowers abortA 40°C week: petunias collapse24°15°Jan26°16°Feb29°19°Mar34°22°Apr38°26°May40°29°Jun42°31°Jul42°32°Aug40°29°Sep36°25°Oct31°21°Nov27°17°Dec

What to plant and do, month by month

Each month lists plants from our UAE Plant Index that can go in now, the garden jobs that matter, and what to avoid. Filter by where you are planting.

Do this month

  • Pick strawberries and cherry tomatoes: January sits in the middle of the UAE winter crop season.
  • Leave frangipani bare and on little water. Leafless from roughly December to March is dormancy, not death.
  • Plant hedges and flowering shrubs while it is cool, so they root before May.

Avoid

  • Panicking when a curry leaf tree drops leaves after a cold night. It returns in spring.

Do this month

  • Cut ruellia clumps to the ground this month; they come back thicker.
  • Cut ornamental fountain grass down to a fist in late winter.
  • Watch mango flowers: February humidity can bring powdery mildew, which stops fruit setting.

Avoid

  • Feeding and watering bougainvillea generously. Kept lean and slightly dry it flowers; pampered, it only grows leaves.

March

This monthPlanting season

Avg high 28.9°C · low 18.6°C

Do this month

  • Last month to plant winter crops and annuals. Anything planted now gets a short season before the heat.
  • Bag guavas or set fruit-fly traps in spring, before the larvae get into the fruit.
  • Get remaining trees, hedges and ground cover in the ground now, or wait for October.

Avoid

  • Starting new tomato plants: above about 35°C the flowers abort, and Dubai's average high passes that in May.

Do this month

  • Last call for outdoor planting. Trees, shrubs and ground cover need cool weeks to root before May.
  • Get shade cloth ready for aloe, nursery succulents and other shade-only plants before May.
  • Move shade-only plants such as croton, mandevilla and areca palm out of the afternoon sun.

Avoid

  • Planting petunias, marigolds or herbs. Their season is ending, not starting.

Do this month

  • Put the shade cloth up: aloe and nursery-raised succulents scorch in unshaded sun from May.
  • Pull out finished tomato plants. October to April is their whole season here.
  • Water citrus deeply enough to flush the pot, never little and often, or salts build up.

Avoid

  • Planting outdoors. Wait for October; plant houseplants indoors instead.
  • Expecting petunias to last. They collapse in the first sustained 40°C week.

Do this month

  • Give shade-only plants morning sun and afternoon shade; western sun burns mandevilla leaf edges within days.
  • Check potted hibiscus standards daily. In a pot in summer, watering is a daily job.
  • Indoors, keep areca palms off the AC vent; dry moving air browns the frond tips.

Avoid

  • Planting outdoors. A new plant has no roots to cope with the heat.

Do this month

  • Water hibiscus daily and give it afternoon shade, which stops the blooms bleaching.
  • Enjoy the summer bloomers: pride of Barbados, vinca, plumbago and allamanda flower through the heat.
  • Indoors, water by the soil, not the calendar: AC air is dry, so check the soil before every watering.

Avoid

  • Planting outdoors, or moving shade-only plants into the sun.

Do this month

  • Flush areca palm pots monthly to wash out tap-water salts.
  • Watch for yellow leaves with green veins on citrus and ixora: that is iron lockout from alkaline water, so feed chelated iron rather than more water.
  • Plan October's planting. August is the hottest month on the chart.

Avoid

  • Planting outdoors. Nights average 31.5°C, the warmest of the year.

Do this month

  • Cut Tecoma stans hard this month for the heaviest winter flowering.

  • Plant trees and hedges early. They get the longest cool run to root before summer.
  • Water less often as the heat drops. Check the soil first instead of keeping the summer schedule.

Avoid

  • Planting a flame tree near paving: its surface roots lift slabs, so keep it 4m clear of walls and decks.

Do this month

  • Plant winter colour: petunias, marigolds and lavender perform from November.
  • Check marigold leaf undersides weekly for spider mite once the humidity drops.
  • Plant fruit trees such as guava, pomegranate and calamansi.

Avoid

  • Siting a ghaf or sidr tree beside a path or play area. Both are thorny.

Do this month

  • Cut frangipani watering right back from December.
  • Pick the first cherry tomatoes; strawberries start fruiting this month.
  • Keep planting trees, hedges and shrubs while the season is at its coolest.

Avoid

  • Mistaking frangipani or pomegranate leaf drop for a dead plant. It is winter dormancy.

How we built this calendar

Temperatures are the official WMO 1991–2020 climate normals for Dubai International Airport. Plants come from the Heavenly Plants UAE Plant Index, which rates each species for UAE conditions, including whether it survives a Dubai balcony from May to September. The rule: winter-only plants are listed October to March, other outdoor plants October to April so roots establish before the heat, and houseplants every month. The garden jobs are written from the same index notes. Watering always depends on pot size and light, so check the soil first. Last updated 14 October 2026.

Planting calendar questions

What can I plant in the UAE in November?
November is one of the best planting months in the UAE: Dubai's average daily high falls to 30.7°C. Plant winter colour and crops such as petunias, marigolds, lavender, herbs, cherry tomatoes and strawberries, plus trees, hedges and shrubs so they root before summer. Check marigolds weekly for spider mite.
Is it too hot to plant outdoors in Dubai from May to September?
For most plants, yes. Dubai's average daily high runs from 38.2°C in May to 41.9°C in August, and a newly planted shrub or tree has no root system to cope. Keep new planting to houseplants indoors over the summer and plant outside from October.
Can I still plant in the UAE in March and April?
Yes, but the window is closing. March is the last month this calendar lists for winter crops and annuals. April is the last for trees, shrubs and ground cover, which need cool weeks to root before the average high reaches 38.2°C in May.
What are Dubai's average temperatures month by month?
Average daily high and low at Dubai International Airport (WMO 1991-2020 normals): January 24.4°C / 15.3°C, February 26.1°C / 16.4°C, March 28.9°C / 18.6°C, April 33.7°C / 22.3°C, May 38.2°C / 26.1°C, June 40.3°C / 28.6°C, July 41.5°C / 31.2°C, August 41.9°C / 31.5°C, September 39.5°C / 28.9°C, October 35.9°C / 25.4°C, November 30.7°C / 21.1°C, December 26.5°C / 17.3°C.
What garden jobs should I do in October in the UAE?
Start planting. Cherry tomatoes and herbs go in now, and trees and hedges planted early get the longest cool run to root before summer. Water less often as the heat drops, and check the soil first instead of keeping the summer schedule.
