UAE plant guide
Which plants survive air conditioning in the UAE?
Air conditioning creates three problems at once for a plant: the air is dry, it moves constantly, and the soil stays cool so it dries slowly from the top while staying wet underneath. That combination produces the classic UAE symptom — crisp brown leaf edges on a plant whose soil is still damp.
The fix is placement before it is species. Nothing should sit in the direct path of a vent, and grouping plants together raises the humidity in their immediate area meaningfully.

The picks, in order
1.Snake Plant 'Laurentii'
Dracaena trifasciata 'Laurentii' · AED 89
Highest AC tolerance of anything we sell. Succulent leaves mean dry moving air costs it nothing.
Safety: Saponins — vomiting and drooling if cats or dogs chew the leaves.
The single most forgiving plant for a UAE apartment: it stores water in its leaves, so dry AC air and a fortnight away change nothing. Overwatering is the only realistic way to kill it.
2.ZZ Plant
Zamioculcas zamiifolia · AED 95
Equally unbothered, and the best performer in an over-cooled office.
Safety: Calcium oxalate crystals — mouth irritation if chewed.
Underground rhizomes make it genuinely drought-proof, and it is the one plant that holds its gloss in a windowless Dubai office corner.
3.Golden Pothos
Epipremnum aureum · AED 55
High tolerance, though it will show the odd brown tip directly under a vent. Move it half a metre and the problem stops.
Safety: Calcium oxalate crystals — mouth and throat irritation if chewed.
Droops visibly when thirsty and recovers within hours, which makes it the best plant to learn UAE watering rhythm on. Also grows indefinitely in a jar of water, sidestepping soil entirely.
4.Chinese Evergreen
Aglaonema commutatum · AED 109
Holds up well in AC and keeps its variegation, which makes it the practical alternative to a Calathea.
Safety: Calcium oxalate crystals — mouth irritation if chewed.
Keeps its pink and silver variegation in far less light than most patterned plants, so it earns a spot in rooms where a Calathea would fail.
5.Rubber Plant
Ficus elastica · AED 129
The large-leaf plant that does not crisp. Rare combination, and the reason we recommend it over a Fiddle Leaf Fig for most UAE homes.
Safety: Milky latex sap — irritant to mouth and skin.
One of the few large-leaved statement plants that tolerates dry AC air without crisping. Wipe the leaves monthly — Gulf dust dulls them fast and blocks light.
6.String of Hearts
Ceropegia woodii · AED 59
Semi-succulent, so AC air is a non-issue, and it is pet-safe.
Semi-succulent, so it handles dry AC air better than any other trailing plant sold here — and it is non-toxic, which almost no other trailer is.
7.Aloe Vera
Aloe barbadensis miller · AED 59
Thrives in dry air, but needs a bright windowsill. AC tolerance does not substitute for light.
Safety: Aloin in the leaf skin — vomiting and lethargy in cats and dogs.
Wants a bright windowsill, not a dark corner. It scorches in unshaded UAE summer sun despite being a succulent, so keep it behind glass or under shade cloth from May.
8.Areca Palm
Dypsis lutescens · AED 165
Included as an honest caution: pet-safe and beautiful, but low humidity tolerance means browning frond tips. Buy it knowing it needs grouping, monthly flushing and no vent exposure.
Pet-safe and architectural, but the frond tips brown in dry AC air. Group it with other plants, keep it off the AC vent, and flush the pot monthly to wash out tap-water salts.
9.Calathea Orbifolia
Goeppertia orbifolia · AED 79
The clearest example of what AC does to a humidity-loving plant. Pet-safe and lovely, but it belongs in a bathroom here, not a living room.
The hardest plant we sell to keep in the UAE and we would rather say so. It is pet-safe and beautiful, but dry AC air crisps the leaf edges and hard tap water browns them — use filtered water and a humid room, or choose a Chinese Evergreen instead.
Common questions
Why do my plant leaves go brown and crispy at the edges in the UAE?
Dry air-conditioned air pulling moisture from the leaf faster than the roots replace it, usually combined with salts from hard tap water accumulating in the pot. Move the plant away from any vent, group it with others, and flush the pot monthly until water runs freely from the drainage holes.
What temperature should I keep my AC at for houseplants?
Anything between 20°C and 26°C is comfortable for the plants on this page, which is the range most UAE homes already run. The temperature matters far less than airflow — a plant in the direct path of a vent suffers at any setting.
Should I mist my plants in an air-conditioned room?
Misting raises humidity for only a few minutes and does little on its own. Grouping plants together, using a pebble tray, or moving a humidity-sensitive plant to the bathroom all work considerably better.
