UAE plant guide
What are the best indoor plants for UAE homes?
The thing that kills houseplants in the UAE is not heat. It is the indoor climate we create to escape it: 22-24°C air, roughly 30-40% relative humidity, constant air movement from vents, and hard alkaline tap water. A plant that thrives in a London flat can crisp out here in a month.
So the ranking below is not a generic houseplant list. It is ordered by how well each plant copes with that specific combination, using the data in our UAE Plant Index.

The picks, in order
1.Snake Plant 'Laurentii'
Dracaena trifasciata 'Laurentii' · AED 89
The most forgiving plant sold in the UAE, and the one we recommend to anyone who has killed something before. It stores water in its leaves, so a fortnight in Europe over Eid changes nothing. Not the pick if you have a cat that chews leaves.
Safety: Saponins — vomiting and drooling if cats or dogs chew the leaves.
The single most forgiving plant for a UAE apartment: it stores water in its leaves, so dry AC air and a fortnight away change nothing. Overwatering is the only realistic way to kill it.
2.ZZ Plant
Zamioculcas zamiifolia · AED 95
The only plant on this list that genuinely holds up in a windowless office corner. Underground rhizomes make it drought-proof. Slow-growing, so buy the size you want rather than expecting it to fill out quickly.
Safety: Calcium oxalate crystals — mouth irritation if chewed.
Underground rhizomes make it genuinely drought-proof, and it is the one plant that holds its gloss in a windowless Dubai office corner.
3.Golden Pothos
Epipremnum aureum · AED 55
The best plant to learn on, because it tells you when it is thirsty — it droops, you water, it recovers within hours. Trails off a shelf or climbs a pole. It will also grow indefinitely in a jar of water if you would rather skip soil.
Safety: Calcium oxalate crystals — mouth and throat irritation if chewed.
Droops visibly when thirsty and recovers within hours, which makes it the best plant to learn UAE watering rhythm on. Also grows indefinitely in a jar of water, sidestepping soil entirely.
4.Chinese Evergreen
Aglaonema commutatum · AED 109
Keeps pink and silver variegation in far less light than any other patterned plant. Choose this over a Calathea if you want the look without the humidity requirement.
Safety: Calcium oxalate crystals — mouth irritation if chewed.
Keeps its pink and silver variegation in far less light than most patterned plants, so it earns a spot in rooms where a Calathea would fail.
5.Rubber Plant
Ficus elastica · AED 129
The large-leaf statement plant that handles dry AC air. Wipe the leaves monthly — Gulf dust builds up faster than people expect and blocks the light it needs.
Safety: Milky latex sap — irritant to mouth and skin.
One of the few large-leaved statement plants that tolerates dry AC air without crisping. Wipe the leaves monthly — Gulf dust dulls them fast and blocks light.
6.Monstera Deliciosa
Monstera deliciosa · AED 145
Buy it for the split leaves, but understand it only splits them in genuinely bright indirect light. In a dim corner you get a healthy plant with plain leaves and a mild sense of disappointment.
Safety: Calcium oxalate crystals — mouth irritation if chewed.
Splits its leaves only in genuinely bright indirect light — a dim corner gives you a healthy plant with plain, unfenestrated leaves. Brown crispy edges here usually mean hard tap water, not underwatering.
7.Spider Plant
Chlorophytum comosum · AED 49
The cheapest pet-safe option, and it produces pups you can pot on for free. Brown tips here are fluoride and salts from the tap, not underwatering — flush the pot monthly.
Pet-safe, cheap and prolific — it throws pups you can pot on for free. Brown leaf tips here are almost always fluoride and salts in the tap water, so flush the pot monthly.
8.Peace Lily
Spathiphyllum wallisii · AED 99
Flowers in low light and wilts theatrically when thirsty, which makes it a useful moisture gauge for the plants next to it. Happiest in a bathroom, the most humid room in a UAE home.
Safety: Calcium oxalate crystals — mouth and throat irritation if chewed.
Wilts dramatically when thirsty and stands back up within an hour of water, so it doubles as a moisture gauge for the plants around it. Happiest in a bathroom, where UAE humidity is highest.
What we left out, and why
- Calathea — Beautiful and pet-safe, but dry AC air crisps the leaf edges and hard tap water browns them. It is the hardest plant we sell to keep alive here, and we would rather say so than sell you one you lose.
- Boston Fern — Wants humidity the UAE indoors does not have. Bathroom-only, and even then it needs water twice a week.
- Fiddle Leaf Fig — Drops leaves at any sudden change, and an AC vent counts. A good plant for an experienced owner, a frustrating first plant.
Common questions
Which indoor plant survives the longest without water in the UAE?
The ZZ Plant and the Snake Plant. Both store water in underground rhizomes or thick leaves and comfortably go 14-21 days between waterings in an air-conditioned room — longer in winter. Both are the right choice if you travel over summer.
Do indoor plants need more or less water in an air-conditioned room?
Less. Air conditioning cools the soil and slows evaporation from the pot, so most tropical houseplants need water every 7-14 days in a UAE apartment rather than the weekly schedule generic care guides suggest. Check the top 2-3cm of soil instead of following a calendar.
Why do my indoor plants get brown leaf tips in Dubai?
Usually two things at once: low indoor humidity, and salts and fluoride in hard tap water accumulating in the pot. Flush each pot thoroughly with water once a month until it runs freely from the drainage holes, and group plants together to raise local humidity.
