UAE plant guide
What should I plant on a UAE balcony in winter?
The UAE gardening calendar runs backwards from the one most people arrive with. October to March is the growing season here: daytime temperatures in the mid-20s, cool nights, low pest pressure and enough light for heavy flowering. May to September is the dormant, defensive half of the year.
That single fact changes what you buy and when. A balcony planted in October gives you five months of colour and crops for the price of bedding plants. The same money spent in April buys three weeks.
This guide splits the winter list into two groups that behave differently: the annuals that are finished by May, and the year-round plants that simply grow best in the cool months. Knowing which is which is the difference between feeling like you killed something and knowing a season ended.

The picks, in order
1.Petunia Tray — 6 Plants
Petunia × atkinsiana · AED 69
The best value colour of the UAE winter, and strictly a season: plant in November, flower hard until March, gone by the first sustained 40°C week in May. Pet-safe, so fine for a balcony a dog uses.
A November-to-March plant, full stop. Petunias flower hard through a Gulf winter and then collapse in the first sustained 40°C week — plant them as a season, not as furniture, and replace them in autumn.
2.Marigold Tray — 6 Plants
Tagetes patula · AED 59
The cheapest way to fill a winter balcony, and the traditional choice for Diwali and wedding planting here. Watch leaf undersides weekly — spider mite arrives as soon as humidity drops.
Safety: Mildly irritant sap; eating a quantity upsets a dog's stomach. Not dangerous, but not a plant to let a puppy strip.

3.Vinca Tray — 6 Plants
Catharanthus roseus · AED 59
Included because it does not stop in May. If you want one tray that carries from winter straight through the following summer, this is it. Toxic to cats and dogs.
Safety: Vinca alkaloids throughout the plant — vomiting, tremors and worse if a dog or cat eats any quantity.
The one bedding annual that does not quit in July. Vinca flowers straight through a Dubai summer on full sun and lives on less water than anything else with a flower on it — the exception that proves the winter-annual rule.
4.Portulaca Tray — 6 Plants
Portulaca grandiflora · AED 49
Winter colour that keeps going into the heat, because it stores water like the succulent it actually is. Flowers close in the afternoon — expected behaviour, not a problem.
Safety: Soluble oxalates — a mouthful irritates; a large quantity is a problem for a small dog.
A succulent pretending to be a bedding flower: it stores water in its leaves, so it survives the week you forget it in June. Flowers close in the afternoon — that is the species, not a problem.
5.Herb 4-Pack — Mint, Basil, Rosemary, Parsley
Mixed culinary herbs · AED 79
Basil, mint and coriander are genuinely productive from October to April on a UAE balcony and genuinely hopeless after that. Plant now, harvest hard, replace in autumn.
A winter crop on a UAE balcony. Basil, mint and coriander run to seed and collapse in July heat — plant from October, harvest through April, and grow mint in its own pot or it takes the tray.
6.Cherry Tomato Plant
Solanum lycopersicum var. cerasiforme · AED 39
October to April is the entire UAE tomato season — above about 35°C the flowers abort and you get a healthy plant with no fruit. Plant in October, pick from December. Leaves and green fruit are toxic; the ripe tomato is not.
Safety: Solanine in the leaves, stems and unripe green fruit — the ripe tomato is fine, the plant is not.
October to April is the entire UAE tomato season: above about 35°C the flowers abort and you get a healthy plant with no fruit. Plant in October, pick from December, pull it out in May.
7.Strawberry Plant
Fragaria × ananassa · AED 39
A reliable UAE winter crop that surprises people: fruit from December through March on a sunny balcony. It will not survive a Gulf summer outdoors at any exposure, so plan it as an annual.
A proper UAE winter crop and a reliable one — fruit from December through March on a sunny balcony. It will not survive a Gulf summer outdoors at any exposure, so treat it as an annual.
8.Calamansi Lime
Citrofortunella microcarpa · AED 99
The permanent resident among the annuals. Winter is when it flowers and sets most heavily, so October is the right month to buy one and let it establish before the heat.
Safety: Citrus oils and psoralens in the peel and leaves upset cats and dogs.
The easiest citrus to fruit in a pot here and the most forgiving of Gulf heat — it flowers and fruits in overlapping flushes almost year-round. Yellowing between green veins means it wants iron, which hard local water strips.
9.Alternanthera Green Tray — 6 Plants
Alternanthera ficoidea · AED 59
Foliage colour rather than flower, which keeps a winter planter interesting between flushes. Full sun, and it holds its burgundy better in cool months.
The plant behind the clipped edging patterns in UAE parks and hotel beds — it holds a line under shearing, but it wants water every other day to do it.
What we left out, and why
- Lavender and rosemary as year-round plants — Both look convincing in a UAE winter and neither reliably survives the summer outdoors here. Treat them as a cool-season pot you move into shade, not a permanent balcony shrub.
- Pansies and violas — They flower in a Gulf winter but collapse at the first warm spell in March, which is earlier than most people expect. Petunias and vinca give you more weeks per dirham.
Common questions
When is the best month to start a balcony garden in the UAE?
October. Night temperatures have dropped, daytime sun is strong but no longer damaging, and anything planted now has five cool months to root before the heat returns. Planting in October rather than March roughly triples the useful life of the same tray of annuals.
Do I water less in a UAE winter?
Yes, substantially — often half the summer frequency. Bedding annuals that need daily water in July typically want every two to three days from December to February, and succulents stretch to weekly or longer. Check the top few centimetres of substrate rather than keeping a fixed schedule.
Can I grow vegetables on a Dubai balcony?
In winter, yes. Tomatoes, chillies, rocket, lettuce, spinach and most herbs crop well on a sunny balcony from October to April. Summer is the off-season — heat makes tomato and pepper flowers drop and makes leafy greens bolt within days.
What happens to my winter balcony plants in May?
Most annuals finish, and that is normal rather than a mistake. Pull them out, keep the perennials and succulents, and cut back on planting until September. Leaving dead annuals in a planter through summer mainly breeds pests for the autumn.
