UAE plant guide
What are the best pet-safe indoor plants in the UAE?
Most of the plants that survive UAE air conditioning best — Snake Plant, ZZ, Pothos, Monstera — are toxic to cats and dogs. That is an inconvenient overlap, and it is why pet owners here end up with a much shorter list than they expect.
Toxic does not mean lethal for most of these: the usual outcome is drooling, vomiting and a miserable evening. But cats in apartments chew out of boredom, so we take the conservative line and only call a plant pet-safe if it is genuinely non-toxic to both cats and dogs.

The picks, in order
1.Spider Plant
Chlorophytum comosum · AED 49
The best starting point: non-toxic, cheap, tolerant, and it produces pups you can pot on. Cats are drawn to the dangling foliage, and chewing it causes no harm beyond a mess.
Pet-safe, cheap and prolific — it throws pups you can pot on for free. Brown leaf tips here are almost always fluoride and salts in the tap water, so flush the pot monthly.
2.Areca Palm
Dypsis lutescens · AED 165
The pet-safe way to get height and a tropical look. The trade-off is dry-air sensitivity — frond tips brown in AC, so keep it away from vents and flush the pot monthly.
Pet-safe and architectural, but the frond tips brown in dry AC air. Group it with other plants, keep it off the AC vent, and flush the pot monthly to wash out tap-water salts.
3.String of Hearts
Ceropegia woodii · AED 59
The only pet-safe trailing plant that also handles dry air well, because it is semi-succulent. Every other popular trailer sold here is toxic.
Semi-succulent, so it handles dry AC air better than any other trailing plant sold here — and it is non-toxic, which almost no other trailer is.
4.Orchid
Phalaenopsis hybrid · AED 149
Non-toxic and flowers for months. Put it somewhere a cat cannot knock it off — the risk with orchids is the pot, not the plant.
Pet-safe and long-flowering. Water by soaking the bark and draining fully — an orchid in soggy bark rots in weeks, and AC air makes the surface look dry long before the roots are.
5.Calathea Orbifolia
Goeppertia orbifolia · AED 79
Pet-safe and genuinely beautiful, but the hardest plant on this page to keep in the UAE. Buy it only if you can give it a humid room and filtered water; otherwise take the Chinese Evergreen look-alike route and accept it is not pet-safe.
The hardest plant we sell to keep in the UAE and we would rather say so. It is pet-safe and beautiful, but dry AC air crisps the leaf edges and hard tap water browns them — use filtered water and a humid room, or choose a Chinese Evergreen instead.
6.Bamboo Palm - Privacy Rectangle
Chamaedorea seifrizii · AED 629
Pet-safe screening for a room divider, and it accepts lower light than the Areca.
The pet-safe way to screen a room divider or a window in lower light than an Areca will accept. Watch for spider mites, which dry AC air encourages.
7.Boston Fern
Nephrolepis exaltata · AED 69
Non-toxic and cats enjoy it, but it needs humidity a UAE apartment does not have. Bathroom only, watered twice a week, and we would rather you knew that before buying.
Pet-safe, but it wants humidity the UAE indoors simply does not have. Bathroom only, and expect to water twice a week — anywhere else it browns out within a month.
What we left out, and why
- Snake Plant, ZZ Plant, Golden Pothos, Monstera, Peace Lily — All toxic if chewed — saponins or calcium oxalate crystals — causing drooling and vomiting. They are our best AC performers, which is exactly the problem for pet owners.
- Sago Palm — Tough and popular in UAE gardens, and it causes severe, often fatal liver failure in dogs. We will not recommend it anywhere a dog can reach it.
- Desert Rose and Oleander — Both contain cardiac glycosides and are dangerous to pets and children. Outdoor boundary planting only.
Common questions
Are Snake Plants safe for cats in the UAE?
No. Snake Plants contain saponins and cause drooling, vomiting and diarrhoea if a cat chews the leaves. It is rarely dangerous, but it is genuinely unpleasant. Choose a Spider Plant or String of Hearts if your cat chews foliage.
What should I do if my cat eats a toxic houseplant?
Remove any plant material from the mouth, do not induce vomiting, and call a UAE vet with the plant's name to hand. Most houseplant cases here involve calcium oxalate irritation and resolve with supportive care, but Sago Palm, Oleander and Desert Rose are emergencies and need immediate attention.
Which pet-safe plant is easiest to keep alive in air conditioning?
The String of Hearts. It is semi-succulent, so it tolerates the dry air of a UAE apartment better than any other non-toxic plant, and it needs water only every 10-14 days.
