UAE plant guide
Which plants are best for beginners in the UAE?
Almost every first plant lost in the UAE dies of the same thing: too much water, too often, in a pot with poor drainage, in a cool room where the soil never dries. Generic care labels say "water weekly", and in an air-conditioned Dubai apartment that is roughly twice as often as the plant wants.
The plants below all tolerate being under-watered far better than over-watered, which is why they forgive a beginner's learning curve.

The picks, in order
1.Snake Plant 'Laurentii'
Dracaena trifasciata 'Laurentii' · AED 89
If you buy one plant, buy this. It survives low light, dry air, and three weeks of being ignored. The only realistic way to kill it is watering it on a schedule instead of checking the soil.
Safety: Saponins — vomiting and drooling if cats or dogs chew the leaves.
The single most forgiving plant for a UAE apartment: it stores water in its leaves, so dry AC air and a fortnight away change nothing. Overwatering is the only realistic way to kill it.
2.ZZ Plant
Zamioculcas zamiifolia · AED 95
As forgiving as the Snake Plant and better in genuinely dark rooms. Slow growth means it stays the size you bought for a long time.
Safety: Calcium oxalate crystals — mouth irritation if chewed.
Underground rhizomes make it genuinely drought-proof, and it is the one plant that holds its gloss in a windowless Dubai office corner.
3.Golden Pothos
Epipremnum aureum · AED 55
The best teaching plant, because it visibly droops when thirsty and recovers in hours. After a month with a Pothos you will know what a thirsty plant looks like, which transfers to everything else you own.
Safety: Calcium oxalate crystals — mouth and throat irritation if chewed.
Droops visibly when thirsty and recovers within hours, which makes it the best plant to learn UAE watering rhythm on. Also grows indefinitely in a jar of water, sidestepping soil entirely.
4.Aloe Vera
Aloe barbadensis miller · AED 59
Easy and useful, but it needs a bright windowsill — put it in a dark corner and it stretches and pales. Water every 2-3 weeks, no more.
Safety: Aloin in the leaf skin — vomiting and lethargy in cats and dogs.
Wants a bright windowsill, not a dark corner. It scorches in unshaded UAE summer sun despite being a succulent, so keep it behind glass or under shade cloth from May.
5.Chinese Evergreen
Aglaonema commutatum · AED 109
Forgiving and more decorative than the others, with pink or silver markings that survive low light. A good second plant.
Safety: Calcium oxalate crystals — mouth irritation if chewed.
Keeps its pink and silver variegation in far less light than most patterned plants, so it earns a spot in rooms where a Calathea would fail.
6.Spider Plant
Chlorophytum comosum · AED 49
The beginner pick for a home with pets. Cheap enough that a mistake does not sting, and it makes free replacements for itself.
Pet-safe, cheap and prolific — it throws pups you can pot on for free. Brown leaf tips here are almost always fluoride and salts in the tap water, so flush the pot monthly.
Common questions
How do I know when to water a plant in the UAE?
Push a finger 2-3cm into the soil. If it is dry at that depth, water thoroughly until it runs from the drainage holes; if it is damp, wait and check again in three days. In an air-conditioned room this usually works out to every 7-14 days, but the finger test beats any schedule.
What is the most common mistake new plant owners make in Dubai?
Watering on a fixed weekly schedule. Air conditioning slows evaporation, so the soil stays wet far longer than it would elsewhere, and the roots rot. Overwatering kills many more UAE houseplants than heat or neglect.
Should I repot a plant as soon as it arrives?
No. Give it three to four weeks to settle into your light and your AC first. Repotting adds root disturbance on top of the move, and it is the most common cause of a new plant declining in its first month.
