A considered choice

Olive trees (Olea europaea) suit the UAE better than almost any other ornamental tree: Mediterranean-native, deep-rooted, heat- and drought-tolerant once established, and happy in full sun. They need what they get here naturally — sun and sharp drainage — and what they hate is a pot that stays wet.
A little more to know.
Do olive trees survive Dubai summers?
Yes. Olives evolved in hot, dry Mediterranean summers and tolerate UAE heat and full sun well. The risk here is not heat but water: soil that never dries, or a planter without drainage. Water deeply and let the top of the soil dry before watering again.
Can I keep an olive tree in a pot on a balcony?
Yes, and table-sized olives are grown for exactly that. Use a planter with drainage, place it in the sunniest position available — olives will not thrive in shade — and expect a potted tree to need water more often in summer than one in the ground.
Will an olive tree fruit in the UAE?
Some do, but fruiting needs a cool winter spell to set flowers, and UAE winters are marginal for that. Treat an olive here as an ornamental and structural tree; any fruit is a bonus, not something we promise on a particular tree.
