A considered choice

Native and desert-adapted trees need a fraction of the irrigation an imported garden does. The ghaf (Prosopis cineraria) is the UAE's national tree and is protected in the wild; the sidr (Ziziphus spina-christi) gives shade and the fruit behind sidr honey; damas (Conocarpus) is the fastest screening tree grown here. Plant October to March and water deeply through the first year only.
A little more to know.
Is it legal to plant a ghaf tree in my garden in the UAE?
Yes. Ghaf trees are protected from being cut down or uprooted in the wild, and planting nursery-grown ghaf in a private garden is encouraged as part of UAE greening programmes. Buy from a nursery source rather than removing a wild tree.
How much water does a native UAE tree need?
A deep weekly soak through the first year while roots establish, then very little — ghaf and sidr send taproots down to reach moisture and survive on rainfall plus occasional deep irrigation. Frequent shallow watering keeps roots near the surface and defeats the point.
