A considered choice

right at home.

The ground covers that actually hold in UAE conditions are ruellia for flower, wedelia for fast bed filling, portulaca for a spot that bakes, alternanthera for clipped edging, asystasia for dry shade, and sesuvium for salt and sand. All are sold here as multi-plant trays, because one liner covers nothing.

A little more to know.

How many ground cover plants do I need per square metre?

For most UAE ground covers, plant 6–9 per square metre for coverage within one season, or 4 per square metre if you can wait two. A 6-plant tray therefore covers roughly 0.7–1 square metre at the faster spacing.

What is the lowest-water ground cover for a UAE garden?

Sesuvium (sea purslane) is the lowest-water option and also the most salt-tolerant — it grows natively on UAE beaches. Portulaca is next, flowering through peak summer on twice-weekly water. Alternanthera and iresine are the thirstiest and need water every other day in July.

Which ground cover works in shade in Dubai?

Asystasia (Chinese violet) is the one that fills dry shade under trees and along north-facing walls where grass thins out. Iresine and pseuderanthemum also hold their colour in part shade, but they need more water than asystasia does.
