Two things kill more UAE houseplants than heat: soil that holds water too long, and tap water. Start with a free-draining potting mix, repot into something only slightly larger, and feed only during active growth. Garden soil and beach sand are not substitutes — both compact in a pot and suffocate roots.
A little more to know.
What potting soil should I use for indoor plants in the UAE?
A light, free-draining potting mix — peat or coco-coir based, opened up with perlite or bark. In an air-conditioned room soil dries slowly, so a dense mix stays wet for days and causes root rot. Never fill a pot with garden soil or builders' sand; both compact and hold water.
How often should I fertilise houseplants in Dubai?
Roughly every 4–6 weeks while the plant is actively growing, at the dose on the label or weaker. Stop or halve it in the peak of summer and in the cooler, darker weeks when growth slows. Over-feeding shows as brown, crispy leaf edges — the same symptom people mistake for underwatering.
Is Dubai tap water safe for plants?
It is usable, but it is desalinated and mineral-treated, and salts build up in the pot over time — visible as a white crust on the soil and brown leaf tips. Flush each pot thoroughly with water every couple of months until it runs out of the drainage holes, and use filtered water for sensitive plants such as calathea.
