A considered choice
Find what feels
right at home.
Choose balcony plants by aspect. South and west-facing Dubai balconies take brutal afternoon sun and suit bougainvillea, desert rose, portulaca, ixora and herbs. North and east-facing balconies get gentler morning light and suit areca palm, croton, jasmine, ferns and gardenia. Getting this one decision right prevents most balcony plant deaths.
A little more to know.
How do I work out which way my balcony faces?
Stand on the balcony in the morning. Direct sun before noon means you face east; direct sun from mid-afternoon means west; sun overhead through the middle of the day means south; no direct sun at all means north. It takes one morning and it decides the entire plant list, so it is worth checking before you buy rather than after.
How many plants fit on a standard Dubai apartment balcony?
A typical 2m by 1.2m balcony comfortably takes one structural plant of 1 to 1.5m, two or three mid-size pots of 30 to 40cm, and a rail planter of six small plants — roughly six to ten plants in total. Crowding beyond that restricts airflow, which raises humidity against the wall and encourages pests.
Will water from my balcony planters annoy the neighbours below?
It can, and in many Dubai buildings it breaches the tenancy rules. Use rail planters with a built-in drip tray, water slowly enough that nothing runs out of the base, and keep planters on the inside of the railing.
