UAE plant guide
What plants survive a west-facing balcony in Dubai?
Aspect matters more than any other factor on a UAE balcony, and west is the hard one. A north-facing balcony gets soft light all day. An east-facing balcony gets strong morning sun and then cools. A west-facing balcony gets the sun at its hottest, from roughly 2pm until sunset, on surfaces that have already been heating since noon — railing and tile routinely exceed 50°C in July, and glass balustrades add reflected glare on top.
That combination kills plants two ways people rarely separate. The first is light burn on the leaf. The second, and more common, is root cooking: a small dark pot standing on hot tile reaches temperatures that damage roots even when the plant is watered. Which is why the fix on a west balcony is as much about pot size, pot colour and getting containers off the floor as it is about species.
The list below is ordered for that exposure specifically. Every plant here is rated 'yes' for Gulf balcony summer in our UAE Plant Index — meaning it holds through the May-to-September peak rather than merely surviving spring.

The picks, in order
1.Bougainvillea 'Pink Pixie'
Bougainvillea glabra 'Pixie' · AED 49
The best flowering plant for direct afternoon sun, and dwarf enough to stay in a rail-sized pot. Keep it slightly dry to keep it flowering. Not for a narrow balcony you walk down — the thorns are real.
Safety: Thorns, and a sap that irritates skin. The scratch is the realistic risk, not poisoning.
Dwarf bougainvillea, bred to stay in a pot. Counter-intuitive rule that catches everyone: it flowers when you keep it slightly dry and hungry — water and feed it generously and you get a healthy green bush and nothing else.
2.Desert Rose (Adenium)
Adenium obesum · AED 119
Native to the same climate band, so a west exposure is simply its habitat. The stored water in the caudex is why it survives on a 5-7 day summer interval. Cardiac glycosides throughout; keep it off a balcony a child or dog uses.
Safety: Cardiac glycosides throughout the plant — genuinely dangerous to cats, dogs and children if eaten. Keep out of reach.
Native to the Arabian peninsula's climate and completely at home in UAE heat — the caudex stores water, so it is the lowest-maintenance flowering plant on a sunny balcony.
3.Vinca Tray — 6 Plants
Catharanthus roseus · AED 59
The colour that lasts. Six plants fill a rail planter and flower through the peak on full western sun, which no petunia or marigold will do. Toxic to pets.
Safety: Vinca alkaloids throughout the plant — vomiting, tremors and worse if a dog or cat eats any quantity.
The one bedding annual that does not quit in July. Vinca flowers straight through a Dubai summer on full sun and lives on less water than anything else with a flower on it — the exception that proves the winter-annual rule.
4.Agave (Blue Attenuata)
Agave attenuata · AED 79
Architecture that needs nothing — full sun, sharp drainage, water when bone dry. Plan the position once: mature spines are sharp enough to matter at waist height in a confined space.
Safety: Saponins in the sap, plus rigid terminal spines that can injure.
Effectively irrigation-free once rooted. Keep the spine tips away from walkways — on a young agave they are at eye level for a child.
5.Portulaca Sun Jewels Tray — 6 Plants
Portulaca grandiflora 'Sun Jewels' · AED 55
The front-of-planter filler for hot exposure. It stores water like a succulent, so it forgives a missed day in a way bedding annuals do not.
Flowers stay shut in shade — this only works in a spot that gets direct midday sun, which makes it the right plant for the balcony corner that bakes.
6.Dwarf Date Palm — 150cm
Phoenix roebelenii · AED 499
Height and shade for the pots beneath it, and completely at home in unshaded UAE sun. Use it as the structural anchor at the sunniest end and let it shelter softer plants.
Safety: Sharp spines at the frond base can puncture skin.
The regionally appropriate palm for a courtyard or a large balcony, at a fraction of a full date palm's footprint.
7.Plumbago 'Blue'
Plumbago auriculata · AED 55
One of very few genuinely blue flowers that hold colour through a Gulf summer. It sprawls rather than stands, so give it the rail to lean on or cut it twice a year and treat it as a mound.
Safety: Plumbagin in the sap irritates skin and the mouth. Mild, but wear gloves when you cut it back.
One of very few genuinely blue flowers that hold colour through a Gulf summer. Sprawls rather than stands — give it something to lean on, or cut it hard twice a year and treat it as a mound.
8.Euphorbia Cactus Column
Euphorbia trigona · AED 149
Thrives on total neglect in the worst exposure you have. Note it is not a true cactus: the white latex is caustic and causes chemical burns and eye injury, so it is a back-corner plant, not a doorway one.
Safety: Caustic white latex — it causes chemical burns on skin and serious injury in the eye. Wear gloves and eye protection when cutting, and keep it away from pets and children.
Not a true cactus, and the difference matters: the milky sap is caustic, unlike anything in the cactus family. Thrives on neglect in full Gulf sun, which is exactly why it ends up somewhere careless.
9.Purple Fountain Grass (Pennisetum Red)
Pennisetum setaceum 'Rubrum' · AED 75
Burgundy movement that takes both the sun and the wind that usually comes with a high west-facing balcony. Cheap enough to treat as a seasonal refresh if it tires.
The burgundy colour only holds in full sun — in shade it reverts towards green, which defeats the point of choosing the red form.
What we left out, and why
- Areca Palm — The most common west-balcony mistake in the UAE. It is a shade plant — fronds yellow and crisp within weeks of unshaded summer sun. It belongs on a north or east balcony.
- Croton — Needs strong light for its colour but burns in direct July sun on a west rail. The usable band is bright shade, which a west balcony does not have in the afternoon.
- Gardenia — Wrong on two counts here: it wants part shade, and it wants acidic soil that UAE tap water steadily undoes.
- Petunias and marigolds — Excellent value from November to March and finished by mid-May. Buy them as a winter season, not as west-balcony planting.
Common questions
Is a west-facing balcony too hot for plants in Dubai?
No, but it narrows the list to species from hot dry climates and it makes pot management as important as plant choice. Use pots of 30cm or wider in a light colour, raise them off the tile on feet or a rack, and add 40-50% shade cloth from May to September for anything outside the full-sun list.
What time of day should I water a west-facing balcony?
Early morning, before the sun reaches the balcony. Watering a hot pot in the afternoon heats the water in the substrate and damages roots, and most of it evaporates before it is used. A second light watering after sunset is better than a midday rescue.
Do glass balustrades make a balcony hotter for plants?
Yes, noticeably. Glass reflects light back onto foliage and blocks the air movement that would otherwise carry heat away, so a glass-sided west balcony behaves like a warmer, stiller version of an open railing. Leave a gap between pots and the glass, and expect to water more often than a neighbour with metal railings.
Which direction is best for a balcony garden in the UAE?
North and east are the easiest: north gives soft light all day and east gives strong morning sun that fades before the worst heat, so both support a far wider plant list including ferns, palms and foliage plants. South and west need the heat-adapted species on this page, or shade equipment.
