What are the best low-light plants for a Dubai apartment?

The ZZ Plant is the best low-light plant for a Dubai apartment, followed by the Snake Plant, Golden Pothos and Chinese Evergreen. All four grow in a north-facing room or several metres back from a window. For a low-light room where you also want flowers, choose a Peace Lily.

"Low light" in the Gulf means something different from elsewhere. Dubai gets intense sun, but towers shade each other, balconies are deep, and windows are often heavily tinted for heat control — so an apartment that feels bright to you can deliver very little usable light to a plant two metres inside the room.

A quick test: hold your hand a foot above where the plant will go on a clear afternoon. A sharp, defined shadow is bright light. A soft, fuzzy shadow is medium. No real shadow at all is low light, and only the plants below will grow there.

Watering intervals are for a 22-24°C air-conditioned room and are ranges, not schedules — pot size and light shift them. Check the top 2-3cm of soil before watering. Heights are typical mature size in the pot supplied.

The picks, in order

  1. 1.ZZ Plant

    Zamioculcas zamiifolia · AED 95

The benchmark. It grows in an interior office with no window at all, on fluorescent light alone. Expect slow growth rather than none.

Safety: Calcium oxalate crystals — mouth irritation if chewed.

Underground rhizomes make it genuinely drought-proof, and it is the one plant that holds its gloss in a windowless Dubai office corner.

  2. 2.Snake Plant 'Laurentii'

Dracaena trifasciata 'Laurentii' · AED 89

Survives low light and tolerates being forgotten, which is the realistic combination in a spare room or a hallway. It grows faster in brighter light but does not need it.

Safety: Saponins — vomiting and drooling if cats or dogs chew the leaves.

The single most forgiving plant for a UAE apartment: it stores water in its leaves, so dry AC air and a fortnight away change nothing. Overwatering is the only realistic way to kill it.

  3. 3.Golden Pothos

    Epipremnum aureum · AED 55

The best low-light trailer. Variegation fades toward plain green in very dim spots — that is the plant adapting to gather more light, not a fault.

Safety: Calcium oxalate crystals — mouth and throat irritation if chewed.

Droops visibly when thirsty and recovers within hours, which makes it the best plant to learn UAE watering rhythm on. Also grows indefinitely in a jar of water, sidestepping soil entirely.

  4. 4.Chinese Evergreen

    Aglaonema commutatum · AED 109

The one patterned plant that keeps its markings in low light. Pick this when you want colour in a dark room and a Calathea would fail.

Safety: Calcium oxalate crystals — mouth irritation if chewed.

Keeps its pink and silver variegation in far less light than most patterned plants, so it earns a spot in rooms where a Calathea would fail.

  5. 5.Peace Lily

    Spathiphyllum wallisii · AED 99

The only reliable flowering option for low light. It needs more frequent water than the others here — every 5-7 days — so it is not the pick for a room you rarely enter.

Safety: Calcium oxalate crystals — mouth and throat irritation if chewed.

Wilts dramatically when thirsty and stands back up within an hour of water, so it doubles as a moisture gauge for the plants around it. Happiest in a bathroom, where UAE humidity is highest.

  6. 6.Bamboo Palm - Privacy Rectangle

    Chamaedorea seifrizii · AED 629

Height and screening in lower light than an Areca will accept, and it is pet-safe. Watch for spider mites; dry AC air encourages them on palms.

The pet-safe way to screen a room divider or a window in lower light than an Areca will accept. Watch for spider mites, which dry AC air encourages.

What we left out, and why

  • Monstera — Grows in low light but will not split its leaves there — you get a plain-leaved plant and the look you paid for never arrives.
  • Succulents and cacti — Frequently sold as easy office plants. They are not low-light plants; in a dim room they stretch, pale and collapse within a few months.

Common questions

Can plants grow in a Dubai apartment with no direct sunlight?

Yes. ZZ Plants, Snake Plants, Golden Pothos and Chinese Evergreens all grow in bright ambient light with no direct sun at all, which is what most north-facing and tower-shaded Dubai apartments provide. Growth is slower than in a bright room, but the plants stay healthy.

Do grow lights help indoor plants in the UAE?

They do, and they are worth it for a genuinely windowless room. A simple full-spectrum LED on a timer for 8-10 hours a day is enough for the plants on this page. In a room that already gets bright ambient light, a grow light adds little.

Which office plant survives a week-long holiday closure?

The ZZ Plant. It tolerates 14-21 days between waterings and low light at the same time, so an office that closes for Eid or the winter break causes it no stress at all.
