UAE plant guide
What are the best hedge plants for privacy in the UAE?
Most UAE hedge failures come from one decision made badly: picking a plant that cannot take the position. A ficus hedge on a beachfront plot browns off under salt and TSE irrigation. A shade-loving hedge on an unshaded west boundary cooks in July.
So the ranking below is by position, not by looks. Match the plant to the boundary you actually have, and the hedge closes in one or two seasons instead of being replanted every year.

The picks, in order
1.Ficus Nitida Hedge — 5 Plants
Ficus microcarpa var. nitida · AED 549
The UAE default for good reason: dense, dark, evergreen, takes hard clipping and reaches screening height fast. It is also the thirstiest option here and has vigorous roots, so keep it away from pool plant rooms and drainage runs. On a salty coastal plot, pick something else.
Safety: Milky sap irritates skin and causes vomiting in cats and dogs if chewed.
The UAE's default privacy hedge and the densest formal face available — but the thirstiest option here, with vigorous roots, and it browns badly within salt-spray range of the Gulf.
2.Hopbush Hedge (Dodonaea viscosa) — 5 Plants
Dodonaea viscosa · AED 169
The best value screen. It closes to about 2m faster than almost anything that survives an unshaded Gulf summer, and once established it wants noticeably less water than ficus. Narrow leaves and papery autumn seed capsules give a lighter, less formal look than a clipped ficus wall.
Closes into a 2m screen faster than almost anything that survives an unshaded Gulf summer, and asks for less water than the ficus hedge most people default to.
3.Wild Jasmine Hedge (Clerodendrum) — 5 Plants
Clerodendrum inerme · AED 189
The coastal specialist. Glossy, scented, and it holds under salt spray and brackish or TSE irrigation that kills a ficus hedge. Clip it formally or let it run informally — informal gives you far more of the white flowers. This is the one to use in Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and beachfront Dubai plots.
Safety: Fruit and leaves cause stomach upset if eaten in quantity.
The hedge that holds on a salt-sprayed Gulf plot or under brackish TSE irrigation, where a ficus hedge browns off and dies back.
4.Carissa (Natal Plum) Hedge — 5 Plants
Carissa macrocarpa · AED 299
Choose it when the hedge has a security job as well as a screening one. Carissa is thorny, dense, drought-tolerant and carries scented white flowers and edible plums. Slower than ficus or dodonaea, and the thorns mean it is not the pick for a boundary children play against.
Safety: Stems carry sharp forked thorns; the unripe fruit and sap cause stomach upset.
Thorny, drought-tolerant and scented, with edible ripe plums — the hedge to use when the boundary has a security job as well as a screening one.
5.Golden Duranta Hedge — 5 Plants
Duranta erecta 'Gold Mound' · AED 329
For a hedge you want to read as a colour, not a wall. Golden-yellow foliage that lights up a dark corner, clipped or loose. It needs more water than dodonaea and scorches in extreme unshaded afternoon sun, so use it on an east or north boundary.
Safety: Berries and leaves are toxic to cats and dogs, and the berries are a known hazard to children.
Golden foliage that lights a dark corner, but it scorches in extreme unshaded afternoon sun here — use it on an east or north boundary rather than a west one.
6.Sea Hibiscus (Hibiscus tiliaceus)
Hibiscus tiliaceus · AED 119
Not usually thought of as a hedge, but it clips into a thick, tall, fast screen and takes salt. Use it where you need 3m-plus of screening quickly on a coastal plot and the ordinary hedge plants are too short to do the job.
The coastal tree hibiscus, not the bedding one — flowers open yellow and turn bronze-red by evening, and it takes salt spray that kills ornamental hibiscus outright.
7.Silver Damas Ball (Conocarpus)
Conocarpus lancifolius 'Sericeus' · AED 199
The punctuation rather than the run — a clipped silver ball to break up a long green hedge line, flank a gate or anchor a driveway. Same conocarpus toughness as the highway planting, so it takes salt, heat and hard clipping without complaint.
Takes salt wind, reflected heat and hard clipping — the silver form is the same tough conocarpus lining UAE highways, just grown as a formal ball.
8.Ficus Panda — Standard 18Ltr
Ficus microcarpa 'Panda' · AED 299
The formal pair at an entrance. The small leaf holds a clipped head far more crisply than ficus nitida, which is why it is used for standards and shaped specimens rather than long runs. Expect two weeks of leaf drop after delivery while it adjusts to the new light.
Safety: Milky sap irritates skin and causes vomiting in cats and dogs if chewed.
Holds a clipped shape far better than ficus nitida because of the smaller leaf — expect two weeks of leaf drop after delivery while it adjusts to the new light level.
What we left out, and why
- Conifer and cypress hedging — Cupressus and thuja hedges are sold across the UAE and frequently fail within two years — they resent the combination of heat, salinity and humidity, and spider mite finishes what the heat starts. If you want the look, an artificial hedge panel is the honest answer.
- Bougainvillea as a hedge — It makes a spectacular flowering barrier and we sell it happily — but it is thorny, untidy between flushes, and needs pruning after every flush to stay dense. As a privacy screen that must look presentable year-round, a hedge plant does the job better.
Common questions
How many hedge plants do I need per metre in the UAE?
Three per running metre closes a screen in about one season for dodonaea, clerodendrum and duranta; ficus nitida can be planted at two to three per metre because it spreads wider. Our 5-plant runs therefore cover roughly 1.7 to 2.5 metres depending on the species and how fast you need it closed.
How long does a hedge take to close in Dubai?
With correct spacing and daily irrigation for the first month, dodonaea and clerodendrum close within one growing season; ficus nitida takes one to two; carissa takes two. Planting in October rather than May roughly halves the time to a closed screen.
Can I plant a hedge against a boundary wall in the UAE?
Yes, but leave 50-60cm of clearance between the wall and the plant line. Reflected heat off a rendered wall in July is severe, and a hedge planted tight against it scorches on the wall side and grows lopsided. The gap also gives you access to clip both faces.
