The UAE growing season for edibles runs October to March. The most reliable fruit trees here are guava, pomegranate, calamansi and grafted Omani lemon; mango needs the hottest, most sheltered spot you have. Herbs and winter vegetables such as cherry tomato and strawberry are planted October to December and picked from January.
A little more to know.
When should I plant vegetables and herbs in Dubai?
October through December. Cooler temperatures let seedlings establish, and crops such as cherry tomato, strawberry, basil and parsley produce from January to April. Most of them finish when temperatures climb past 40°C in late spring.
Which fruit trees actually fruit in the UAE?
Guava and pomegranate are the most forgiving, calamansi fruits almost year-round in a pot, and a grafted Omani lemon fruits reliably from its second season. Buy grafted trees rather than seed-grown — a seed-grown citrus or mango may take many years and never fruit true.
Can I grow herbs on a Dubai balcony?
Yes, with bright light out of harsh afternoon sun and daily watering in summer. Mint, basil, rosemary and parsley all do well in rail planters. In July and August, 50% shade cloth makes the difference between a herb that survives and one that cooks.
