UAE plant guide
What are the best bedroom plants for UAE homes?
Bedrooms in UAE apartments are usually the coolest, darkest and driest rooms in the home: blackout curtains against the sun, AC running overnight, and a door that stays shut. That combination rules out most flowering and humidity-loving plants.
On the common question of plants and oxygen at night: the effect either way is far too small to matter in a ventilated room. Choose a bedroom plant on light and watering needs, not on air-quality claims.

The picks, in order
1.Snake Plant 'Laurentii'
Dracaena trifasciata 'Laurentii' · AED 89
Handles blackout curtains and overnight AC, needs water every two to three weeks, and takes up almost no floor area. The default bedroom plant.
Safety: Saponins — vomiting and drooling if cats or dogs chew the leaves.
The single most forgiving plant for a UAE apartment: it stores water in its leaves, so dry AC air and a fortnight away change nothing. Overwatering is the only realistic way to kill it.
2.ZZ Plant
Zamioculcas zamiifolia · AED 95
The pick for a genuinely dark bedroom where even a Snake Plant would only just cope.
Safety: Calcium oxalate crystals — mouth irritation if chewed.
Underground rhizomes make it genuinely drought-proof, and it is the one plant that holds its gloss in a windowless Dubai office corner.
3.Chinese Evergreen
Aglaonema commutatum · AED 109
Softer and more decorative than the two above while keeping its markings in low light.
Safety: Calcium oxalate crystals — mouth irritation if chewed.
Keeps its pink and silver variegation in far less light than most patterned plants, so it earns a spot in rooms where a Calathea would fail.
4.String of Hearts
Ceropegia woodii · AED 59
Pet-safe, trails neatly off a shelf or headboard, and tolerates dry AC air better than any other trailing plant.
Semi-succulent, so it handles dry AC air better than any other trailing plant sold here — and it is non-toxic, which almost no other trailer is.
5.Golden Pothos
Epipremnum aureum · AED 55
Good on a wardrobe top or high shelf, where it gets the brighter light near the ceiling and trails down.
Safety: Calcium oxalate crystals — mouth and throat irritation if chewed.
Droops visibly when thirsty and recovers within hours, which makes it the best plant to learn UAE watering rhythm on. Also grows indefinitely in a jar of water, sidestepping soil entirely.
6.Peace Lily
Spathiphyllum wallisii · AED 99
The one flowering option that works in a dim bedroom. It needs water every five to seven days, so it suits someone who is actually in the room daily.
Safety: Calcium oxalate crystals — mouth and throat irritation if chewed.
Wilts dramatically when thirsty and stands back up within an hour of water, so it doubles as a moisture gauge for the plants around it. Happiest in a bathroom, where UAE humidity is highest.
What we left out, and why
- Jasmine and other heavily scented plants — Wonderful on a balcony, overwhelming in a closed bedroom overnight, and they need far more light than a bedroom provides.
- Ferns — Bedroom AC is the driest air in the home. A fern browns out there faster than anywhere else in the apartment.
Common questions
Is it safe to keep plants in the bedroom overnight?
Yes. Plants do release a small amount of carbon dioxide at night, but the quantity from a few houseplants is negligible against the air volume of a bedroom — orders of magnitude less than a sleeping person. Choose on light and watering needs instead.
Which bedroom plant needs the least attention?
The Snake Plant, at every 14-21 days in an air-conditioned room, followed closely by the ZZ Plant. Both tolerate the low light of a curtained bedroom without any decline.
Do plants help with dry air from air conditioning?
Marginally, and only in numbers. A grouped cluster of several plants raises humidity in its immediate area, which is why grouping helps the plants themselves. A single plant will not measurably change a room's humidity.
