UAE plant guide
Which native plants should I grow in the UAE?
Native planting in the UAE is not only an environmental argument, it is a practical one. Irrigation is the largest ongoing cost of a Gulf garden, and the difference between a native tree and an imported ornamental is measured in years of water bills.
The Ghaf in particular is protected and culturally significant here — it is the UAE's national tree, and its deep root system lets it survive where almost nothing else does.

The picks, in order
1.Ghaf Tree — UAE National Tree
Prosopis cineraria · AED 449
The UAE's national tree. Evergreen, deep-rooted, and effectively self-sufficient once established. Thorny, so plan its position before planting rather than after.
The UAE's national tree, adapted to this exact climate over millennia. Once established it needs almost no irrigation, which makes it the most water-efficient shade tree you can plant here.
2.Sidr Tree (Ziziphus)
Ziziphus spina-christi · AED 429
Native, fruiting, and historically significant across the region. Comparable drought tolerance to Ghaf with a denser canopy.
Native, edible-fruited and deeply drought-tolerant. Like the Ghaf it is thorny, so site it away from paths and play areas.
3.Dwarf Date Palm — 150cm
Phoenix roebelenii · AED 499
The regionally appropriate palm at courtyard scale. Far lower maintenance than a full date palm and suited to a terrace.
Safety: Sharp spines at the frond base can puncture skin.
The regionally appropriate palm for a courtyard or a large balcony, at a fraction of a full date palm's footprint.
4.Desert Rose (Adenium)
Adenium obesum · AED 119
Arabian-adapted and flowers through summer on minimal water. Toxic, so site it accordingly.
Safety: Cardiac glycosides throughout the plant — genuinely dangerous to cats, dogs and children if eaten. Keep out of reach.
Native to the Arabian peninsula's climate and completely at home in UAE heat — the caudex stores water, so it is the lowest-maintenance flowering plant on a sunny balcony.
5.Agave (Blue Attenuata)
Agave attenuata · AED 79
Not native, but as drought-adapted as anything you can buy here and visually at home in a gravel or desert-style garden.
Safety: Saponins in the sap, plus rigid terminal spines that can injure.
Effectively irrigation-free once rooted. Keep the spine tips away from walkways — on a young agave they are at eye level for a child.
6.Succulent 6-Pack
Mixed Crassulaceae and Echeveria · AED 89
The low-cost way to fill a gravel bed or a planter in a desert-style scheme. Give them bright shade rather than unfiltered July sun.
Safety: Mixed tray — Echeveria and Sedum are non-toxic, but Crassula (jade) causes vomiting in cats and dogs.
Bright shade, not full summer sun — unshaded July sun scorches most nursery-grown succulents because they were raised under netting.
Common questions
Is it legal to plant a Ghaf tree in the UAE?
Yes — planting Ghaf is actively encouraged, and it is the UAE's national tree. What is restricted is cutting down or uprooting established Ghaf trees, which is protected under UAE environmental regulation. Check with your local municipality before removing any mature native tree.
How much water does a native UAE garden need?
Far less than a conventional one. Established Ghaf and Sidr can go 5-10 days between deep waterings even in summer, against daily watering for hibiscus or turf. The saving comes in the second year onward; year one still needs regular irrigation to establish roots.
Can native UAE plants grow in pots?
Dwarf date palms, Desert Rose, agaves and succulents all do well in large containers. Ghaf and Sidr are deep-rooted trees and belong in the ground — in a pot they stay small and lose most of their drought advantage.
