Plant Care in the UAE

How often should I water garden plants in the UAE cool season (October to March)?

Roughly half as often as in summer, least of all from December to February. Established trees and shrubs usually need a deep soak every one to two weeks, bedding and pots every two to three days, succulents weekly or less. October and March are still warm, so adjust gradually and check the soil 5–10cm down before watering.

The cool season changes the maths. Lower temperatures, weaker sun and longer nights mean far less water evaporates from the soil and far less is drawn through the leaves, so a garden watered on its summer schedule in January sits wet. Wet, cool soil is where root rot starts, and it is one of the few ways to lose an established tree here.

Cut back in steps rather than all at once. In October, when days can still pass 35°C, trim the summer schedule by about a quarter. From December to February, most plants are comfortable on around half the summer frequency. In March, as the heat returns, build back up so the garden meets April with moist, well-rooted soil.

Plants that went in this season are the exception. Anything planted in the last month or two still has a small root ball and needs regular water until it roots out, even in January; see the best time to plant trees and shrubs for why the cool season is when to plant. Low-water choices such as those in our lowest-maintenance outdoor plants guide need almost nothing once established.

If your garden or balcony runs on a timer, a drip irrigation kit with a battery timer makes the seasonal change a two-minute job. If your irrigation water is salty or from a well, the rules change again — see which plants tolerate salt water irrigation.

Should I change my irrigation timer in October?

Yes, but gently. Timers left on summer settings are the most common cause of overwatered UAE gardens in winter. Reduce run frequency first and keep each run long enough to wet the root zone deeply, because short, frequent watering keeps roots shallow. Revisit the setting again in December and March.

Should I water my garden after it rains in the UAE?

Skip at least the next scheduled watering, and longer after heavy rain. Winter rain is rare but can soak the ground for days, and extra irrigation on top of it waterlogs the soil around trunks and roots. Push a finger or a stick 5–10cm into the soil; if it is damp, wait.

What time of day should I water garden plants in winter?

Morning. Leaves and soil surface dry during the day, which reduces fungal problems as humidity rises in the cooler months. Evening watering, sensible in summer, leaves plants sitting wet through the coolest hours in December and January.
