Plant Care in the UAE

Which plants tolerate salty or TSE irrigation water in the UAE?

Clerodendrum inerme, sea hibiscus, sesuvium, conocarpus (damas) and peltophorum all tolerate brackish well water and treated sewage effluent irrigation in UAE gardens. Flush the root zone with fresh water periodically so dissolved salts leach downward instead of accumulating where the roots are.

Many UAE communities and villa compounds irrigate from TSE lines or brackish wells. That water is perfectly usable — it just narrows the plant list, because salts concentrate in the root zone every time the surface evaporates and only fresh water carries them back down.

Safe choices: clerodendrum for hedging, sea hibiscus for fast height, sesuvium for ground cover, and damas or conocarpus for trees. Avoid ficus hedging, most ornamental hibiscus and anything grown for thin soft foliage.

The maintenance habit that matters: once a month, irrigate deeply with fresh water — enough to wet well below the root zone — so accumulated salts move down and out. A white crust on the soil surface means you have left it too long.
