Snake Plant care guide for the UAE
Sansevieria trifasciata
The Snake Plant (Sansevieria trifasciata 'Laurentii') is the most forgiving plant you can own in the UAE. Water every 2–3 weeks and let the soil dry out completely, place it anywhere from a dim hallway to a bright window, and repot only when the roots crack the pot. Almost every dead snake plant in Dubai was overwatered, not neglected.
Quick facts
- Water
- Every 2-3 weeks. Let soil dry completely between waterings
- Light
- Tolerates low light to bright indirect. Very adaptable
- Temperature
- 15-30°C - handles AC environments well
- Humidity
- Low humidity is fine. No misting needed
- Soil
- Cactus/succulent mix or well-draining potting soil
- Feeding
- Once in spring and once in summer with diluted fertilizer
Light
Snake plants tolerate low light better than almost anything else, which makes them the go-to for hallways, bathrooms and north-facing rooms. They grow faster and hold their yellow leaf margins better in bright indirect light. Direct sun through UAE glass in summer can bleach the leaves, so keep them a little back from a hot south window.
Watering: less than you think
Water every 2–3 weeks in an air-conditioned room, and only when the soil is completely dry all the way down. In winter, or in a dim spot, stretch that to every 4 weeks. Water at the soil, not into the centre of the leaf rosette, where trapped water causes rot. When in doubt, wait another week.
Soil and pot
Use a cactus and succulent mix, or a normal potting mix with a third of perlite or grit. Choose a heavy pot: tall snake plants become top-heavy and tip over in lightweight plastic. Drainage holes are non-negotiable.
Temperature and humidity
Happy between 15 and 30°C, which covers every UAE interior and a shaded balcony for most of the year. Low humidity is fine; never mist. Bring balcony plants indoors in peak summer only if the pot sits in direct afternoon sun.
Repotting and dividing
Snake plants like being pot-bound and often only need repotting every three to five years, when roots bulge or crack the pot. Divide the rhizomes at that point to make new plants: pull the clump apart, keep at least three leaves per section, and pot each into dry cactus mix. Wait a week before watering.
Common problems and fixes
Mushy, soft leaves at the base: overwatering and rot. Unpot, cut away soft tissue, let it dry for two days, and repot into dry mix.
Leaves falling over: the pot is too light or the plant is thirsty after a very long gap. Water deeply and stake or repot into a heavier container.
Wrinkled, inward-curling leaves: underwatering. A thorough soak fixes it within days.
Brown tips: usually a one-off dry spell or salt build-up. Trim the tip and flush the soil.
Snake Plant 'Laurentii' questions, answered
Can a snake plant live in a room with no window in Dubai?
It will survive for a long time under normal room lighting but will not grow much. For steady growth give it at least indirect daylight from a window. Rotate a windowless-room plant to a brighter spot for a few weeks every couple of months.
How do I divide a snake plant?
Unpot the clump when it is root-bound, pull or cut the rhizomes apart keeping at least three leaves per section, and pot each into dry cactus mix. Wait about a week before the first watering so cut surfaces can callus.
Why is my snake plant soft and mushy at the base?
Root and leaf rot from overwatering or water sitting in the leaf rosette. Remove the plant, cut away all soft tissue, let it dry for two days, and repot into dry, gritty mix. Water only when the soil is fully dry from then on.
