ZZ Plant care guide for the UAE
Zamioculcas zamiifolia
The ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) stores water in potato-like rhizomes, so it thrives on neglect in UAE offices and apartments. Water every 2–3 weeks once the soil is fully dry, keep it in low to bright indirect light away from hot glass, and never let it sit in a wet saucer. Glossy leaves need only an occasional wipe.
Quick facts
- Water
- Every 2-3 weeks. Drought tolerant - roots store water
- Light
- Low to bright indirect. Excellent for offices
- Temperature
- 18-28°C
- Humidity
- Low humidity is fine
- Soil
- Well-draining mix with extra perlite
- Feeding
- 2-3 times per year is plenty
Light
ZZ plants handle low light better than almost any other houseplant and are the standard choice for windowless Dubai offices lit only by ceiling lights. They grow faster in bright indirect light. Keep them out of direct sun through glass, which yellows and scorches the leaflets in summer.
Watering
Water every 2–3 weeks in an AC room and only when the soil is dry all the way down. The rhizomes hold weeks of reserve, so underwatering is nearly impossible, while overwatering rots the rhizomes and yellows the stems. In winter or a dim office, every 4 weeks is plenty.
Soil, pot and repotting
A well-draining potting mix with added perlite, in a pot with drainage holes. The rhizomes swell and can crack thin plastic pots, so choose a sturdy container. Repot every two to three years or when rhizomes push the plant up out of the soil.
Temperature and humidity
Comfortable from 18 to 28°C; normal indoor humidity is fine and it never needs misting. Avoid placing it directly under a cold AC vent for long periods, and keep it indoors through the UAE summer rather than on a hot balcony.
Cleaning and propagation
The glossy leaves collect dust; wipe them with a damp cloth every few weeks so they keep photosynthesising efficiently. To propagate, divide the rhizomes when repotting, or root a stem cutting in water; stem cuttings are slow and can take several months to form a new rhizome.
Common problems and fixes
Yellow stems and leaflets with damp soil: overwatering and rhizome rot. Unpot, remove soft rhizomes, and repot into dry mix.
Wrinkled stems: underwatering after a very long gap. One thorough watering fixes it.
Brown crispy leaflet edges: direct sun or salt build-up. Move it back from the window and flush the soil.
Leaning stems: reaching for light. Rotate the pot weekly or move it closer to a window.
ZZ Plant questions, answered
Is the ZZ plant good for a windowless Dubai office?
Yes. The ZZ plant is one of the few houseplants that stays healthy under ceiling lights alone. Water it every 3–4 weeks in that setting, wipe the leaves occasionally, and expect slow but steady growth.
Why are my ZZ plant stems turning yellow?
Yellow stems with damp soil mean the rhizomes are rotting from overwatering. Unpot the plant, cut away any soft rhizomes, repot into dry, well-draining mix, and wait until the soil is fully dry before watering again.
How do I propagate a ZZ plant?
The reliable method is dividing the rhizomes when you repot: separate clumps with at least one stem each and pot them individually. Stem cuttings rooted in water also work but are slow, often taking several months to form a new rhizome.
