Eucalyptus plant care guide for the UAE

Eucalyptus gunnii

Potted Eucalyptus gunnii grows well in the UAE if it gets the brightest spot you have: a sunny windowsill or a balcony from October to April. Water when the top 2–3cm of soil is dry, keep it out of 45°C afternoon sun in peak summer, and prune it regularly to keep it bushy and fragrant. It is toxic to cats and dogs; use cut sprigs in the shower, not the whole plant.

Light: as much as you can give it

Eucalyptus is a sun tree. Indoors it needs a south- or west-facing window with several hours of direct light; a bright room without direct sun will keep it alive but leggy and dull. The best UAE arrangement is a balcony or terrace from October to April, when daytime highs are pleasant and the plant can grow hard, then a bright indoor spot for the peak summer months.

Watering

Water when the top 2–3cm of soil is dry, then soak and drain. Eucalyptus dislikes soggy roots and will drop leaves if left in water, but it also wilts quickly if it dries out completely in a warm spot. Expect to water every 4–7 days on a bright windowsill and every 2–3 days on a balcony in the shoulder seasons. Use a pot with a drainage hole and well-draining potting mix.

Surviving the UAE summer

From June to September, pot-grown eucalyptus struggles outdoors: the root ball heats up in 45°C air and the leaves dehydrate faster than the roots can supply water. Move it indoors to the brightest window you have, or to a spot on the balcony that gets morning sun only. Do not place it directly in the blast of an AC vent; the combination of dry cold air and reduced light causes leaf drop.

Pruning to keep it bushy and fragrant

Left alone, eucalyptus becomes a thin, tall stem. Pinch or cut the growing tips every few weeks during active growth, and it branches into a dense, silver-blue bush. The clippings are the sprigs you want for the shower or a vase. Hard-prune it back by up to a third in early autumn if it has grown out of shape.

Using eucalyptus in the shower

Cut a few stems 20–30cm long, bundle them with string, and hang them behind the shower head where the steam reaches them but the direct spray does not. The warm steam releases the eucalyptol scent for two to three weeks before the bundle dries out. Use clippings from pruning rather than moving the potted plant into the bathroom, where it would not get enough light.

Common problems and fixes

Leaf drop soon after arrival: transit and light change. Give it the brightest spot available and keep watering steady; new growth follows within a few weeks.

Leggy stems with sparse leaves: not enough direct light. Move it to a sunnier window or balcony and start pinching the tips.

Crisp, dry leaves: underwatering or hot afternoon sun on the pot. Water deeply and shade the pot in summer afternoons.

Yellowing lower leaves with damp soil: overwatering. Let the top of the soil dry before the next watering.

Eucalyptus questions, answered

Can I keep a eucalyptus plant on a Dubai balcony?

Yes from October to April, in full or morning sun. From June to September move it indoors to the brightest window or to a morning-sun-only spot: 45°C afternoon air overheats the pot and dries the leaves faster than the roots can keep up.

How do I keep a potted eucalyptus bushy?

Pinch or cut the growing tips every few weeks during active growth so it branches instead of shooting up as a single stem. Use the clippings for shower bundles or vases. Hard-prune by up to a third in early autumn if it has grown out of shape.

How long does a eucalyptus shower bundle last?

Hung behind the shower head where steam reaches it but direct spray does not, a bundle of fresh 20–30cm stems releases its scent for two to three weeks before drying out. Replace it with new clippings from your plant.

Why is my eucalyptus dropping leaves indoors?

Usually too little light or a cold AC draft. Eucalyptus needs several hours of direct sun; a dim room plus dry vent air causes leaf drop. Move it to a south- or west-facing window away from the vent and keep watering consistent.
