Dodonaea (hopbush) hedge care in the UAE
Dodonaea viscosa
A dodonaea hedge in the UAE needs full sun, three plants per running metre for a screen that closes in one season, daily water for the first month and twice-weekly deep soaks after. It reaches about 2 metres and uses noticeably less water than a ficus hedge of the same height.
Quick facts
- Water
- Daily for the first month, then twice weekly deep soaks
- Light
- Full sun. Grows leggy and thin in shade
- Temperature
- Handles full unshaded Gulf summer heat
- Humidity
- No requirement. Wind-tolerant
- Soil
- Free-draining sandy soil; hates waterlogging
- Feeding
- One granular feed in October to drive the cool-season flush
Spacing and planting
Three plants per running metre closes a screen in roughly one growing season. Two per metre works and costs less, but expect two seasons before the gaps disappear. A 5-plant run therefore covers about 1.7 metres at the fast spacing or 2.5 metres at the slower one.
Leave 50–60cm between the plant line and any boundary wall. Reflected heat off rendered wall in July is severe, and a hedge planted tight against it scorches on the wall side and grows permanently lopsided. The gap also lets you clip both faces.
Plant October to March. A hedge planted in the cool season is close to closed before it meets its first Gulf summer; a May planting is still a row of individual shrubs a year later.
The first month decides everything
Water daily for the first month after planting — this is the single biggest lever on how fast the screen closes, and it is where most UAE hedge plantings are lost. A drip line on a timer is worth installing for this alone.
From month two, twice-weekly deep soaks in summer and weekly in winter. Established dodonaea is genuinely drought-tolerant and wants noticeably less irrigation than the ficus hedge most UAE villas default to.
It hates waterlogging. In heavy or compacted ground, break the base of the planting trench and add sand or grit rather than planting into a hole that holds water.
Clipping and shape
Tip-prune lightly every couple of months through the growing season while the hedge is filling. That encourages branching low down, which is what gives a screen a solid base rather than bare legs.
Once it is at height, clip twice a year — late February and September. Dodonaea holds a shape reasonably but never as crisply as ficus; its narrow leaves and looser habit read as a green screen rather than an architectural wall. If a knife-edge formal face is the requirement, use ficus and accept the water bill.
Papery pink seed capsules appear in autumn and are part of the appeal. Clipping in September removes some of them, so shift the cut to October if you want the display.
Hopbush Hedge (Dodonaea viscosa) — 5 Plants questions, answered
How tall does a dodonaea hedge grow in the UAE?
Around 2 to 3 metres if left to run, and it is easily held at 1.5 to 2 metres with two clips a year. For screening above 3 metres, sea hibiscus or ficus nitida are the better choices.
Is dodonaea better than ficus for a UAE hedge?
For an exposed sunny boundary where the goal is a fast green screen on less water, yes. For a dense, dark, formally clipped wall, ficus nitida is still better. Within salt-spray range of the Gulf, neither is ideal and clerodendrum is the right plant.
Does a dodonaea hedge need fertiliser?
Very little. One granular feed in October drives the cool-season growth flush that fills the screen. Heavy feeding produces soft growth that scorches in summer, so resist the urge to push it through the hot months.
