Monstera Deliciosa care guide for the UAE

Monstera deliciosa

Monstera Deliciosa wants bright indirect light, weekly watering once the top 5cm of soil is dry, and a moss pole to climb. In air-conditioned UAE homes the main challenges are dry air and low light: keep it near a bright window out of direct afternoon sun, group it with other plants or mist to lift humidity, and new leaves will split. Toxic to cats and dogs if chewed.

Light and fenestration

The famous splits and holes (fenestrations) only appear on new leaves when the plant gets enough light. Place it within one to two metres of a bright window with indirect light, or with only gentle morning sun. In a dim corner it survives but produces small, solid, heart-shaped leaves. Direct afternoon sun through UAE glass scorches the leaves.

Watering and hard water

Water when the top 5cm of soil is dry, roughly weekly in a bright spot and every 10–14 days in a cooler AC room. Soak thoroughly and let it drain. Monstera tolerates UAE tap water; if you see brown leaf edges over time, flush the pot monthly to wash out salts or switch to filtered water.

Humidity in an AC apartment

Monstera comes from humid forest floors and shows dry-air stress as brown, crispy leaf edges. Keep it away from the direct blast of an AC vent, group it with other plants, stand it on a pebble tray, or mist a few times a week. A small humidifier in the room makes the biggest difference during the months when the AC runs constantly.

Support: moss poles and aerial roots

Monstera is a climber. Give it a moss pole or coir pole and tie new growth to it; leaves grow larger and split more when the plant climbs. Aerial roots are normal: tuck them into the pole or the soil, or leave them. Do not cut them off unless they are in the way, and never cut them all at once.

Soil, repotting and feeding

Use a chunky, well-draining mix: potting soil with added perlite and orchid bark. Repot every one to two years in spring when roots circle the pot. Feed monthly in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength, and pause feeding in winter.

Common problems and fixes

Yellow lower leaves with damp soil: overwatering. Let the top 5cm dry before watering.

Brown crispy edges: dry AC air or salt build-up. Raise humidity and flush the soil.

New leaves without splits: not enough light. Move it closer to a bright window.

Drooping with dry soil: thirsty. Water deeply; it recovers within a day.

Monstera Deliciosa questions, answered

Why do my new Monstera leaves have no splits?

Not enough light. Fenestrations only form on new leaves when the plant gets bright indirect light. Move it within one to two metres of a bright window, out of direct afternoon sun, and give it a moss pole to climb; the next leaves will split.

Should I cut off Monstera aerial roots?

No need. Aerial roots are normal for a climbing plant. Tuck them into a moss pole or the soil, or leave them alone. Cutting a few that are in the way is harmless, but never remove them all at once.

How do I raise humidity for a Monstera in an AC room?

Keep it out of the direct AC blast, group it with other plants, stand it on a pebble tray, or mist a few times a week. A small humidifier running during the months when the AC is on constantly is the most effective fix for brown, crispy leaf edges.
