Head to head
Monstera or Bird of Paradise for a UAE living room?
Both are bought for the same reason — one large plant that fills a corner and changes a room. They want different light, and that is what should decide it.
The practical constraint in most UAE apartments is not floor space but usable light. Towers shade each other and windows are heavily tinted, so a plant that needs part sun often cannot get it indoors here.

Choose the Monstera for an apartment
It is the more tolerant of the two indoors and needs only bright indirect light, which a UAE apartment can usually provide near a window. Be realistic about the fenestrations: the split leaves you are paying for only develop in genuinely bright light, so a dim corner gives you a healthy plant with plain leaves. Brown crispy edges here are usually hard tap water rather than underwatering — flush the pot monthly.
Safety: Calcium oxalate crystals — mouth irritation if chewed.
Monstera Deliciosa — AED 145Choose the Bird of Paradise for height and real light
It wants the brightest position you have and will take a few hours of direct winter sun, which makes it the better plant for a villa with tall windows, a shaded terrace or a majlis with glazing on two sides. It also gets substantially taller — up to about 2.5m — so it suits a double-height room the Monstera would look lost in. Split leaves are normal and are how the plant sheds wind load, not damage.
Safety: Toxic seeds and sap — vomiting and drowsiness in cats and dogs.
Bird of Paradise - Large — AED 799Common questions
Does a Bird of Paradise flower indoors in the UAE?
Rarely. Strelitzia nicolai needs several years of maturity and a lot of direct light before it flowers, which indoor conditions here seldom provide. Buy it for the architectural foliage and treat any flowering as a bonus.
Why is my Monstera not splitting its leaves?
Almost always insufficient light. Fenestrations develop as the plant matures in bright indirect light; in a dim corner a Monstera stays healthy but keeps producing plain, unsplit leaves. Move it closer to a window and new growth will split.
Which is better for a room with air conditioning?
The Monstera has moderate AC tolerance and handles indoor conditions in a UAE apartment more reliably. A Bird of Paradise also copes, but it suffers more where low light and dry air combine, which is the common apartment scenario.
