Snake Plant or Golden Pothos for a first plant in the UAE?
These two account for most first plants sold in the UAE, and for good reason — both survive low light, dry AC air and inconsistent watering. They fail differently, though, and that is what should decide it.
The most common way a first plant dies here is a weekly watering schedule in an air-conditioned room, where the soil never fully dries. One of these two protects you from that better than the other.

Choose the Snake Plant if you are away a lot
It holds water in its leaves, so it tolerates 14-21 days between waterings and a summer trip home changes nothing. Its narrow upright form fits the gaps a UAE apartment actually offers — beside a sofa, behind a door, on a shelf. The one risk is that it gives you no warning when overwatered: by the time the base softens, the rot is established. Water less than you think.

Choose the Golden Pothos if you want to learn
It is the best teaching plant sold here because it communicates. Thirsty leaves droop noticeably and lift again within hours of watering, so within a month you know exactly what a thirsty plant looks like — a skill that transfers to everything else you buy. It also roots from cuttings in a glass of water, so one plant becomes several for free. It needs water more often, at every 7-12 days.

Which is better for a UAE apartment with air conditioning?
Both have high AC tolerance and either works. The Snake Plant is marginally better directly in an airflow path; a Pothos in front of a vent will show occasional brown tips, which stop once it is moved half a metre away.
Can I grow a Pothos in water in the UAE?
Yes, indefinitely. A cutting in a jar of water grows for years and sidesteps the overwatering problem entirely, which makes it a good option for someone who has lost plants to root rot before. Change the water every week or two and keep it out of direct sun.
Is either safe for pets?
No. The Snake Plant contains saponins and the Golden Pothos contains calcium oxalate crystals; both cause drooling, vomiting and mouth irritation if chewed. For a pet home, the Spider Plant is the closest equally forgiving alternative.
