Head to head
Elephant Bush or Agave — which succulent for a UAE home?
Both are near-zero-water plants that suit UAE conditions, and that is where the similarity ends. One is a soft, clippable shrub you can keep in a living room; the other is a spined architectural sculpture for a gravel bed.
If you are choosing between them, the deciding questions are whether the plant goes indoors, and whether anything in the household is going to walk into it.

Choose Elephant Bush for pets, indoors, or a clipped shape
Portulacaria afra is genuinely non-toxic to cats and dogs, which almost no other shrub-sized succulent is — jade plant, which it closely resembles, is toxic to both. It tolerates dry AC air, so it works on a bright windowsill indoors as well as on a terrace, and it takes clipping like a hedge plant. Water every 2–3 weeks; overwatering is the only realistic way to lose it.

An agave is a sculpture: a rosette of thick blue-grey leaves that anchors a gravel bed or a large pot and needs effectively nothing from you. It belongs outdoors in full sun — indoors it stretches and loses the form that makes it worth having. The leaf tips are sharp enough to matter, so keep it back from paths, doorways and anywhere children run.
Safety: Saponins in the sap, plus rigid terminal spines that can injure.

Is elephant bush the same as jade plant?
No, though they look alike and are often confused. Elephant bush is Portulacaria afra and is non-toxic to cats and dogs; jade plant is Crassula ovata and is toxic to both. If pet safety is the reason you are choosing, the distinction matters.
Can an agave live indoors in a UAE apartment?
Not well. Agave needs more direct sun than an apartment interior provides, and in lower light it etiolates — the rosette loosens and the plant loses its shape permanently. For an indoor succulent of similar toughness, elephant bush or a snake plant is the better choice.
