Head to head

Desert Rose or Bougainvillea for a Dubai balcony?

The verdictChoose the Desert Rose if you water infrequently or travel: it stores water in its caudex and needs watering only every 7-10 days even in July. Choose Bougainvillea for sheer colour and coverage on a railing or wall. Critical difference: Desert Rose is seriously toxic, so Bougainvillea is the safer choice around pets and children.

Last reviewed · Written for UAE conditions

Both genuinely thrive in unshaded UAE summer sun, which narrows the field considerably — most flowering plants sold here do not. The decision is about how often you will actually water, and whether children or pets use the balcony.

A shared counterintuitive point: both flower better with slightly less water than people give them. Kindness is the usual cause of a green, flowerless plant.

Watering intervals are for a 22-24°C air-conditioned room and are ranges, not schedules — pot size and light shift them. Check the top 2-3cm of soil before watering. Heights are typical mature size in the pot supplied.

Choose the Desert Rose for low effort

It evolved for this climate. The swollen caudex stores water, so it flowers through the worst of summer on a watering every 7-10 days, against Bougainvillea's every 2-3. That makes it the right plant for a balcony you visit twice a week, or for someone who travels over summer. The serious caveat is toxicity: it contains cardiac glycosides throughout, and it is genuinely dangerous to a dog, cat or small child who chews it.

Safety: Cardiac glycosides throughout the plant — genuinely dangerous to cats, dogs and children if eaten. Keep out of reach.

Choose Bougainvillea for colour and coverage

Nothing else covers a railing, wall or trellis with this much colour in Gulf conditions, and it is far safer around a family — the risk is thorns, not poison. Expect to water every 2-3 days in July, and resist the urge to over-water: a bougainvillea kept consistently moist produces vigorous green growth and very few bracts. Prune after each flush to keep it dense rather than leggy.

Safety: Sharp thorns, and sap that can irritate skin.

Common questions

Is Desert Rose poisonous to pets?

Yes, seriously so. Adenium obesum contains cardiac glycosides in every part of the plant, including the sap, and ingestion is a veterinary emergency for cats and dogs. Do not plant it on a balcony a pet uses, and wash your hands after pruning it.

Why is my Bougainvillea not flowering in Dubai?

Usually too much water, too much nitrogen feed, or too little sun. Bougainvillea flowers in response to mild stress, so let the pot dry slightly between waterings, use a low-nitrogen bloom feed, and give it at least six hours of direct sun.

Do either of these survive a Dubai summer in a pot?

Both do, in a large enough pot. Small pots cook in July and root temperature is the real limit — use the biggest container you can, raise it off hot tile, and keep it off an unshaded metal railing where reflected heat is highest.
