Spider Plant care in the UAE: brown tips, hard water and free babies

Chlorophytum comosum

A spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum) is one of the easiest pet-safe plants for a UAE home. Give it bright indirect light, let the top 2–3cm of soil dry between waterings (every 7–10 days in AC), and flush the pot monthly so hard-water salts do not brown the tips. It makes babies in the short days of winter. The ASPCA lists it as non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Light: bright and indirect, with a little morning sun

A spider plant grows best in bright, indirect light: beside an east-facing window, or a metre or two back from a south- or west-facing one. A couple of hours of morning sun is fine. Afternoon sun through west-facing glass from April to October is not; it bleaches the leaves and scorches brown streaks across them.

It tolerates a medium-lit room, but in real shade the leaves go limp, the arching habit flattens and it rarely makes babies. If yours has stopped growing, change the light before anything else.

Watering in AC: let it dry a little

Spider plants store water in thick, white, fleshy roots, so they forgive a missed watering far better than most leafy plants. Let the top 2–3cm of soil dry, then water until it drains from the hole and empty the saucer. In a 22–24°C AC room that is usually every 7–10 days; in a brighter, warmer spot from May to September, every 5–7 days.

The leaves show thirst: they lose their arch, turn paler and feel soft. Water then and they firm up within a day. Soggy soil is the bigger risk. Roots that sit wet rot, and the plant yellows from the centre outwards.

Brown tips: salts and dry air, rarely fluoride here

Brown leaf tips are the most common spider plant complaint in the UAE. Spider plants are sensitive to fluoride, and many care guides written for other countries blame fluoridated tap water. The UAE does not add fluoride to its tap water, so here the usual causes are different: minerals from hard, desalinated tap water building up in the soil, fertiliser salts, soil that dried out completely, and dry AC air.

Flush the pot once a month: run water through it at the sink for a minute and let it drain fully. Feed at half strength at most. If the tips keep browning, switch to filtered water, and if you switch to bottled water, read the label first: some bottled brands add fluoride, the one thing a spider plant does not need. Our guide to using Dubai tap water on houseplants covers resting, filtering and flushing.

Brown tips never turn green again. Trim them with clean scissors, following the leaf's pointed shape, and leave a thin line of brown rather than cutting into green tissue, which only browns again.

AC, humidity and where to hang it

A spider plant copes with the dry air of an AC flat far better than a fern or calathea. It does not need misting or a pebble tray, unlike the Boston fern, which needs a humid bathroom to thrive here. Just keep it out of the direct stream of a vent, where the tips dry and brown faster.

It looks best hung, or on a high shelf where the babies can dangle. Hang it near a window, not in the top corner of the room: warm air collects near the ceiling, a hanging pot dries out faster than one on a shelf, and a ceiling AC cassette blows straight across it. A ceiling hook in front of an east window is ideal.

From October to April a shaded balcony suits it well. From June to September keep it in full shade and water every day or two, or bring it inside; small pots overheat quickly on a hot balcony floor.

Babies: why they appear in winter and how to pot them

Spider plants make runners and babies in response to short days: they need less than about 12 hours of daylight, with long, uninterrupted nights, for around three weeks. In Dubai the days are shorter than 12 hours from roughly late September to mid-March, which is when runners appear, often carrying small white flowers first and then plantlets at the tips. A plant in a room lit until midnight may never get the long dark night it needs, and a young plant that has not yet filled its pot rarely bothers.

To pot a baby, pin it onto a small pot of moist mix while it is still attached, and cut the runner once it has rooted, usually after two or three weeks. Or cut it off and stand its base in a glass of water on a bright sill until the roots are 2–3cm long, then pot it. Either way, keep the new pot evenly moist for its first month.

Soil, pot and feeding

A standard, free-draining potting mix is all it needs, in a pot with a drainage hole. The fleshy roots grow fast: when they push up above the soil, circle the pot or start lifting the plant, repot in spring, one size up. A crowded plant can also be divided into two or three clumps.

Feed monthly in spring and summer, March to September, with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength on damp soil, and skip the winter months. Over-feeding is one of the commonest causes of brown tips, so less is better.

Pets: the easy pet-safe choice

The ASPCA lists the spider plant as non-toxic to cats and dogs, and it is part of our pet-safe plant range. Cats are drawn to the dangling leaves and runners. Chewing does a cat no harm beyond a possible upset stomach if it eats a lot, but it leaves the plant tattered, which is another reason to hang it. Buying a spider plant and the first two weeks

Our Spider Plant is AED 49 in a 12cm nursery pot. It is one of the hardy plants we deliver everywhere: same day in Dubai on orders placed before 1pm, next day to Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, and within 48 hours to Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah. The minimum order is AED 300 and delivery is free. The photos on the site are AI-generated; we send a real WhatsApp photo of your actual plant before it leaves.

After delivery, a bent leaf or a brown tip from the journey is normal; trim it. Put the plant in bright indirect light and water when the top of the soil dries. If it arrives damaged, send a photo within 24 hours of delivery for a free replacement. If it is still struggling after 14 days despite following the care card, message us on WhatsApp on +971 50 136 8558: that is what the 14-day settle-in promise is for.

Spider Plant questions, answered

Why is my spider plant not making babies?

Usually the nights are not long or dark enough, or the plant is still young. Spider plants form runners after about three weeks of days shorter than 12 hours with unbroken darkness at night, which in Dubai means roughly late September to mid-March. Give it bright indirect light by day, keep room lights off it at night, and let it fill its pot.

Should I cut the brown tips off my spider plant?

Yes, if you want it to look tidy; trimming does not harm the plant. Use clean scissors, follow the leaf's pointed shape and leave a thin line of brown rather than cutting into green, which browns again. Then fix the cause: flush the soil monthly, feed less, and do not let the pot dry out completely.

Does bottled water stop brown tips on a spider plant?

It can help, because it avoids the minerals that build up from hard UAE tap water, but read the label first. The UAE does not add fluoride to tap water, while some bottled brands do, and spider plants are sensitive to fluoride. Filtered tap water plus a monthly flush of the pot is usually enough.

Can I root spider plant babies in water?

Yes. Cut off a baby, stand its base in a glass of water on a bright windowsill and change the water every few days. Pot it into moist potting mix once the roots are 2-3cm long, and keep the soil evenly moist for its first month while it settles.

Can a spider plant live on a Dubai balcony?

Yes from October to April, in shade or bright shade. From June to September keep it in full shade and water every day or two, or bring it inside: small pots overheat on a hot balcony floor, and afternoon sun scorches the leaves.
