The UAE landscaping plants nurseries actually stock — and what they cost

What UAE nurseries really stock for gardens and landscaping, what each plant costs, and how to buy ground cover and hedging without wasting money.

The plants filling UAE landscaping schemes are not the ones on garden-centre display benches. They are ruellia, wedelia, dodonaea, conocarpus, pennisetum and portulaca — bought by the tray and the hedge run, at a fraction of single-plant prices. Here is what a real UAE nursery stock list looks like, and how to buy from it without overpaying.

What a real UAE nursery stock list looks like

A working UAE nursery does not hold its volume in monsteras. It holds it in landscape liners: tens of thousands of pennisetum, portulaca, ruellia and wedelia in small pots, plus a few hundred trees in 18, 30 and 50-litre bags. That inventory exists because landscape contractors buy in quantity, and it is the same material that ends up in every villa garden, community bed and hotel planting in the country.

Understanding this changes how you buy. The plants in a UAE landscaping scheme are chosen for survival and cost per square metre, not for novelty. If you want a garden that still looks good in its second summer, that list is a better starting point than a display bench.

  • Ground cover in volume: ruellia, wedelia, portulaca, alternanthera, asystasia, iresine, sesuvium
  • Structure and grasses: pennisetum (green and red), dianella, portulacaria afra
  • Hedging: dodonaea, clerodendrum, carissa, duranta, ficus
  • Trees: delonix, tabebuia, bauhinia, cassia, peltophorum, neem, conocarpus
  • Specimen: chamaerops, cycas, ficus panda, silver damas balls

Why buying single plants is the expensive mistake

A bare bed needs 6–9 ground cover plants per square metre to close within one growing season. Bought one at a time from a garden centre, a 3-square-metre border becomes twenty-odd separate purchases, and it still looks patchy after a year because people give up halfway.

This is why our ground cover is sold as 6-plant trays and our hedging as 5-plant runs. It is the unit the plant is actually used in. One ruellia liner is a contractor's line item, not something a household buys.

What these plants cost in the UAE

Prices across UAE online nurseries in September 2026 vary enormously with grade, and grade is often not stated. A small ruellia liner sells for a few dirhams; a bushy tecoma at nursery grade sells for over two hundred. The same species can differ tenfold.

The number that matters is cost per square metre covered, or per running metre of hedge — not the price on one pot. A tray that covers a square metre for AED 79 is better value than six separate AED 20 plants, and far better than one AED 20 plant that covers nothing.

Choosing by position, not by picture

Almost every UAE planting failure is a position mistake. A ficus hedge within salt-spray range of the Gulf browns from the leaf edge inward. Alternanthera in an unwatered bed dies in July. Pennisetum 'Rubrum' in shade reverts to green, which defeats the point of paying for the red form.

Work the other way round: describe the position — full sun or shade, fresh or brackish irrigation, coastal or inland, pets or no pets — and the plant list narrows to two or three sensible options. Our ground cover guide and hedge guide are both organised that way.

When to plant

October to March, without qualification. A plant put in during the cool season roots through winter and spring and meets its first Gulf summer with a root system that can supply the canopy. The same plant put in during June spends three months surviving.

If you are planning a garden now, order in September and October. That is the front edge of the UAE planting season and the reason nursery stock lists are at their fullest.

A little more clarity

Common questions.

Is it cheaper to buy plants from a UAE nursery or online?

Nursery prices per plant can be lower, especially for small liners, but they are quoted at trade grades and volumes and usually exclude delivery. For household quantities the delivered tray or hedge-run price is normally the better deal, and it removes the transport problem of moving 30 plants in a car.

What is the cheapest way to fill a large UAE garden bed?

Wedelia or sesuvium ground cover at 4–6 plants per square metre, planted in October so it closes over one cool season. Both are inexpensive per plant and spread by running, so you can plant at the wider spacing and let them fill the gaps rather than buying more.

Do UAE nurseries sell the same plants to the public as to landscapers?

Generally yes — the stock is the same. The difference is in grade and quantity: contractors buy small liners by the thousand, while retail buyers usually want a larger plant that looks finished on delivery. Ask for the pot size or litre grade rather than relying on a photograph.
