There are four ways to buy a plant in Dubai and they are good at different things. Nursery rows in Warsan and Al Quoz are the cheapest for volume and for large outdoor stock, garden centres are the easiest for a single considered purchase, supermarket and hardware racks are convenience at a price, and online delivery wins when you want a specific plant, in good condition, without a car and a Saturday.
The nursery rows: Warsan, Al Quoz and the wholesale end
Dubai's nursery clusters — the well-known strip near Warsan and International City, and the yards scattered through Al Quoz — are where the trade buys. They are open yards rather than shops: stock sits in the sun in black nursery bags, prices are negotiable, and the people working there know plants well but are not there to style your living room.
This is the right choice when you need quantity or size. Hedging plants by the row, trees in 100-litre bags, bulk potting mix, a dozen ground-cover trays — buying any of those retail is a mistake. It is also the place to go if you enjoy the process, because you will find things no online catalogue lists.
The costs are real, though, and worth naming. You need a vehicle that can take a 2m tree and you need to be willing to lose a morning. Quality varies hugely bag to bag and there is no guarantee — once the plant is in your car it is your plant. Stock is grown outdoors, so an indoor plant bought from a yard in June has been living in conditions nothing like your apartment and will sulk for weeks. Prices are quoted differently to different people, and the first number is rarely the last one. Verify opening hours before you drive: several yards keep split hours and close through the middle of the day.
Garden centres
Dubai's garden centres — the long-established one on Sheikh Zayed Road and a handful of others around the city — sit between a nursery and a homeware shop. Plants are under shade, labelled, and sold alongside pots, soil, tools and fertiliser, with staff who can answer a question. Prices are higher than the yards, sometimes substantially, and you are paying for that shade, labelling and convenience.
They are the best option for a single, considered purchase where you want to see the exact plant first: a statement plant for a corner, a specific pot to match a room, or a gift you want to carry out that day. They are the worst option for volume, where the multiple over a nursery yard becomes hard to justify.
Supermarket and hardware racks
The plant racks in hypermarkets and DIY stores are the impulse channel, and treating them as anything else leads to disappointment. Stock turns over fast, plants are often kept indoors under retail lighting with irregular watering, and by the time a plant has spent two weeks on a rack next to a checkout it is rarely in the condition it left the nursery in.
That said, they are genuinely useful for cheap seasonal colour — a tray of petunias or marigolds in December for a balcony rail — where the plant only has to last a season and the price is low enough that a few failures do not matter. Check the soil is not bone dry, avoid anything with yellowing lower leaves, and look under the leaves for insects before it goes in your trolley.
Buying online, and what to demand from it
Online plant delivery in the UAE has gone from a novelty to a normal channel, and it is the right choice when you know what you want, you want it in good condition, and you do not want to spend a Saturday sourcing it. The catch is that a plant is a living thing being couriered through a climate that can kill it in the back of a hot van, so the seller matters more than in any other category of online shopping.
Four things separate a plant delivery service worth using from one that is not, and all four are questions you can ask before ordering.
- What happens if it arrives damaged or dies in the first days? A named guarantee with a stated window beats a vague promise. Ours is the alive-on-arrival guarantee plus a settle-in period.
- How is it packed and how long is it in transit? Insulated packing and same or next-day delivery matter more in July than any other factor. Ask specifically about summer handling.
- Are the photos of the actual plant grade you will receive, and is the delivered height stated? A stated height on arrival is a commitment; a stock photo of a mature specimen is not.
- Can you talk to a person? A WhatsApp number answered by someone who knows plants is worth more than a contact form, particularly for the first two weeks after delivery when most problems appear.
Which to use for what
For a villa garden being planted from scratch, the nursery rows, with a landscaper or at minimum a pickup truck. For one large indoor statement plant you want to choose in person, a garden centre. For seasonal colour on a balcony rail, whatever is cheapest and closest, replaced each October. For a specific indoor plant in known condition, a gift going to someone else's address, or anything you want delivered today, online.
That last case is what we built Heavenly Plants around: a stated delivery height for every plant, same-day delivery across Dubai on orders before 1pm and next-day to Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, insulated packing, and a guarantee that is written down. If you are shopping for someone else, plant gifts is the place to start; if you are furnishing a room, the indoor plants collection and our best indoor plants for the UAE guide narrow it down faster than a yard visit will.
One honest note on price. A plant delivered to your door, packed, guaranteed and grown for indoor conditions will cost more than the same species in a bag in a nursery yard. What you are buying is the condition it arrives in and the recourse if it fails. For a AED 40 tray of annuals that trade-off does not make sense. For a plant you intend to keep for five years, it does.
A little more clarity
Common questions.
Are plants cheaper at Dubai nurseries than online?
For large outdoor stock, hedging and bulk quantities, yes — often substantially, because you are buying trade stock in nursery bags with no packing, delivery or guarantee attached. For single indoor plants the gap narrows once you account for the drive, and nursery stock grown outdoors in summer often needs weeks to adapt to an air-conditioned room.
What should I check before buying a plant from a nursery yard?
Lift the bag and check the roots are not circling out of the base, look under the leaves and in the leaf joints for insects, avoid anything with yellowing lower leaves or a dry, shrunken rootball, and ask how long the plant has been in the yard. There is no return once it is in your car, so the inspection is the whole protection.
Is it safe to order plants online in the UAE summer?
Yes, with the right seller. What matters is transit time and packing: same or next-day delivery, an insulated box, and a courier that does not leave the parcel in a lobby. Ask how summer orders are handled before you buy, and prefer sellers who will reschedule a delivery rather than send a plant out on a day they cannot complete it.
