How do I keep balcony plants alive while I travel in summer?
Summer travel is when most UAE balcony collections are lost, and it is predictable enough to plan around. A 20cm pot in July can go from watered to bone dry in under a day, so the question is never whether the plant is drought tolerant in the ground — it is how much water the container holds.
For a week or less, the shade move does most of the work. Pull everything into the most shaded corner of the balcony, or bring it just inside a shaded doorway, and group the pots tightly. Water deeply until it runs from the base, top-dress with gravel to slow evaporation, and empty nothing into saucers deeper than a couple of centimetres — a standing reservoir in 45°C heat sours roots and breeds mosquitoes.
Beyond a week, use equipment. A balcony drip kit on a battery timer costs less than replacing a planted balcony once and removes the guesswork. Test it for several days before you travel: the failure mode is a timer that works and an emitter that has clogged.
If you travel every summer, choose the collection accordingly. Agave, yucca, desert rose and portulacaria run on a 5 to 10 day interval even in July, which turns a two-week trip from a crisis into a non-event.
