Choosing Plants

Do plants absorb moisture from the air in a Dubai home?

No. Houseplants take up water through their roots and release it through their leaves, so they add humidity to a room rather than remove it. That makes leafy plants such as Boston fern, areca palm and peace lily useful natural humidifiers in dry AC air, but no plant will dry out a damp Dubai bathroom or wardrobe.

The moisture-absorbing plant is a myth that travels with lists of bathroom plants. Plants that thrive in bathrooms do so because they like humid air, not because they remove it. A plant draws water up from its soil and loses most of it as vapour through pores in its leaves, a process called transpiration, so the water you give it ends up in the room's air. A few epiphytes, such as air plants, take in some moisture through their leaves, but far too little to change how a room feels.

In the UAE that flips the question, because the usual problem indoors is dry air, not damp. With the AC running most of the year, indoor humidity often sits around 30–40%. A group of leafy plants raises the humidity in the air right around them, which is why grouped plants cope with AC better than scattered ones. The broad-leaved, thirsty species release the most: Boston fern, areca palm and peace lily. The first two are non-toxic to cats and dogs; the peace lily is not.

Keep the effect in proportion. A few plants humidify the corner they stand in, not a whole apartment, in the same way they do not measurably clean a ventilated room's air, which our honest look at whether air-purifying plants work explains. If dry air is bothering your skin or sinuses, a humidifier does the job; plants are the pleasant side effect. For the species that handle cold, dry airflow best, see the best plants for AC rooms.

What actually gets rid of damp in a Dubai apartment?

Air movement and drying, not plants. Damp in UAE homes usually shows up in bathrooms without extraction, in wardrobes on an outside wall, and in the humid late-summer months. Run the bathroom extractor fan, leave the door open after a shower, keep the AC running, since it pulls moisture out of the air as it cools, and use a dehumidifier or moisture-absorber tubs in wardrobes. Adding plants to a damp room makes it worse: wet soil in a warm, still corner is where mould and fungus gnats start.

Which plants work best as natural humidifiers in an AC room?

The ones with plenty of thin leaf that like evenly moist soil, such as Boston fern, areca palm and peace lily. Snake plants, ZZ plants, succulents and cacti are the opposite: they are built to save water, release very little, and are the wrong choice if humidity is the goal. Group three or more leafy plants together, stand them on a tray of wet pebbles with the pots sitting above the water line, and keep them out of the direct blast of an AC vent.
