Can an olive tree grow in a pot on a Dubai terrace?
Olives come from the Mediterranean, where summers are hot and dry and soil is poor and stony, so the Gulf climate suits them better than most landscape trees. The one thing they will not tolerate is wet feet: a pot without drainage or a heavy, water-retaining soil kills an olive faster than any heat.
Choose a mature olive tree for instant presence or a table-top olive for a bistro look. Pot up into a fibre or terracotta planter with drainage holes, a gritty free-draining mix, and a layer of gravel on top to slow evaporation. Full sun is essential; a shaded terrace produces sparse, leggy growth.
Fruiting on a UAE terrace is possible but unreliable, since olives need a period of cool nights to set flower buds; treat fruit as a bonus. Feed with a balanced slow-release fertiliser in February and September, prune crossing branches in January or February to keep an open shape, and bring nothing indoors: olives dislike AC and low indoor light. See the olive tree collection for sizes and the Olive Grove set for a matched pair.
