Choosing Plants

Which plants can survive a Dubai balcony in summer?

Bougainvillea, olive trees, desert rose (adenium), agave, most cacti and succulents, portulaca and heat-hardy ficus survive a Dubai balcony through summer with morning sun, afternoon shade and evening watering. Bamboo palm and areca palm work in fully shaded corners. Tropical houseplants and small pots should come indoors from June to September.

Balcony aspect decides everything. A north- or east-facing balcony gets gentle morning sun and is workable for most heat-tolerant plants all summer. A west- or south-facing balcony takes the full afternoon blast and suits only true desert plants, or needs a shade sail.

Reliable choices: olive trees in large fibre planters, bougainvillea for colour, adenium and agave for sculpture, and dense screening plants such as ficus and bamboo palm where there is shade. Browse our outdoor plants and privacy and screening collections for UAE-proven options.

Care shifts in summer: water deeply at dusk rather than lightly in the morning, use large light-coloured pots that hold moisture and stay cooler, raise pots off the tiles, and group them so they shade one another. For shaded corners where nothing grows, an artificial hedge is the honest answer.
