Can lavender grow indoors in the UAE?
Lavender is a Mediterranean shrub that wants the conditions of a hillside: blazing sun, poor sandy soil, wind and drought. A Dubai apartment offers the opposite, so the plant survives indoors rather than thrives unless it sits right against a sunny window. The good news is that AC air is dry, which lavender prefers over humidity.
Best plan: keep lavender outside in full sun during the cool months, when it grows and flowers, and move it to the brightest indoor sill in June. Use a terracotta pot with gritty, alkaline soil, water only when the pot is dry through, and never let it sit in a saucer of water. Trim after flowering to keep it compact.
If you mainly want scent indoors, consider Arabian jasmine, which tolerates humidity and bright indirect light better and is non-toxic to cats and dogs. Lavender is not pet-safe: the ASPCA lists it as toxic to cats and dogs, usually causing nausea or vomiting if chewed, so keep it where pets cannot reach it. Both appear in our Scented Bloom set.
