Yes, you can grow eucalyptus in the UAE. Large species like river red gum line roads across the Emirates, and compact potted types such as Eucalyptus gunnii do well on bright balconies from October to April and on a sunny windowsill through the summer. The trade-offs are light (it needs a lot) and heat management in July and August. This guide covers the species you will encounter, what works in a pot, how to use the fragrant leaves, and what to check before buying.

Eucalyptus species you will see in the UAE

Eucalyptus is a huge Australian genus of more than 700 species. A few are relevant here.

  • Eucalyptus camaldulensis (River Red Gum): the tall street and park tree planted widely across the UAE for shade and windbreaks. Extremely heat- and drought-tolerant. Too big for a pot.
  • Eucalyptus gunnii (Cider Gum): the species sold as a potted houseplant. Round, silver-blue juvenile leaves with the classic fresh scent; stays compact with pruning. This is the plant we sell as Eucalyptus.
  • Eucalyptus cinerea (Silver Dollar): the florist's eucalyptus with coin-shaped silver leaves. Sold as cut stems more than as a plant; similar care to gunnii in a pot.
  • Eucalyptus citriodora (Lemon-Scented Gum): lemon-scented leaves, fast and tall; better as a garden tree than a houseplant.

Can eucalyptus grow indoors in Dubai?

It can, with a caveat: eucalyptus is a sun tree and a dim room will not keep it happy for long. Indoors it needs a south- or west-facing window with several hours of direct light. Given that, a potted Eucalyptus gunnii lives comfortably in an air-conditioned apartment, especially if it spends the cooler months on a balcony where it can grow hard in full sun. Keep it out of the direct blast of an AC vent, which combines dry air and cold in a way the plant dislikes.

Watering, summer heat, pruning and troubleshooting are covered step by step in the Eucalyptus care guide.

Balcony eucalyptus: the UAE calendar

October to April is eucalyptus season on a UAE balcony. Full or morning sun, watering every two to three days as the pot dries, and pinching the tips every few weeks gives you a dense silver bush by spring. From June to September, move it to the brightest indoor window or to a spot that gets morning sun only: a pot in 45°C afternoon air heats through, and the leaves dry faster than the roots can supply water. Use a light-coloured pot to reduce heat absorption and never let the pot stand in a saucer of water.

Shower eucalyptus, cut stems and scent

The fresh, camphor-like scent comes from eucalyptol in the leaf oils, released by warmth and moisture. That is why a bundle hung in the shower works: the steam releases the scent for two to three weeks per bundle. Prune your potted plant and use the clippings rather than moving the pot into a dim bathroom. Cut stems also last two to three weeks in a vase and dry well for arrangements.

Pet safety and placement

Eucalyptus leaves and oil are toxic to cats and dogs, causing drooling, vomiting and lethargy if eaten. Keep the plant and any shower bundles out of reach, or choose a fragrant plant from our pet-safe collection such as Arabian jasmine. Lavender is often suggested as the pet-safe swap, but the ASPCA lists it as toxic to cats and dogs too. For people, eucalyptus is safe to handle and smell; never ingest the leaves or undiluted oil.

Buying eucalyptus in Dubai

Look for a bushy plant with multiple stems rather than a single tall whip, firm silver-blue leaves without brown crisping, and slightly moist, free-draining soil. Eucalyptus dislikes root disturbance, so buy a plant that is already in a reasonable pot and avoid repotting until spring. Heavenly Plants delivers Eucalyptus gunnii in a 14cm pot with same-day delivery in Dubai before 1pm and next-day to Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, in insulated packaging with an alive-on-arrival guarantee. It also features in our Scented Bloom set.

A little more clarity

Common questions.

Can eucalyptus survive the summer heat in Dubai?

Established trees such as river red gum do; potted plants need help. From June to September keep a potted Eucalyptus gunnii indoors at a bright window or in a morning-sun-only spot, use a light-coloured pot, and water when the top of the soil dries. Full afternoon sun on a pot at 45°C dries the leaves faster than the roots can cope.

Which eucalyptus is best for growing in a pot?

Eucalyptus gunnii (cider gum) is the standard potted choice: compact with pruning, silver-blue round leaves and a strong fresh scent. Eucalyptus cinerea (silver dollar) also works in a pot. Large landscape species like river red gum and lemon-scented gum outgrow containers quickly.

Can I grow eucalyptus from the cut stems sold by florists?

Rarely. Florist stems are usually mature, woody growth that does not root reliably, and many have been treated. Buy a rooted potted plant instead; semi-ripe cuttings from your own plant in spring have a better chance if you want to propagate.

Does eucalyptus repel mosquitoes in the UAE?

The oil contains compounds used in some repellents, but a potted plant releases far too little into the air to protect a balcony. Enjoy it for the scent and foliage; use a proper repellent for mosquitoes.
