# Can lavender grow indoors in the UAE?

**Short answer:** Only with serious sun. Lavender needs six or more hours of direct light, dry air and good airflow, so indoors it works on a south- or west-facing windowsill and nowhere else. It does far better on a UAE balcony from October to April, then in the sunniest indoor spot through summer. Water sparingly; wet soil is what usually kills it.

Lavender is a Mediterranean shrub that wants the conditions of a hillside: blazing sun, poor sandy soil, wind and drought. A Dubai apartment offers the opposite, so the plant survives indoors rather than thrives unless it sits right against a sunny window. The good news is that AC air is dry, which lavender prefers over humidity.
Best plan: keep [lavender](https://heavenlyplants.ae/products/lavender) outside in full sun during the cool months, when it grows and flowers, and move it to the brightest indoor sill in June. Use a terracotta pot with gritty, alkaline soil, water only when the pot is dry through, and never let it sit in a saucer of water. Trim after flowering to keep it compact.
If you mainly want scent indoors, consider [Arabian jasmine](https://heavenlyplants.ae/products/jasmine-plant), which tolerates humidity and bright indirect light better and is non-toxic to cats and dogs. Lavender is not pet-safe: the ASPCA lists it as toxic to cats and dogs, usually causing nausea or vomiting if chewed, so keep it where pets cannot reach it. Both appear in our [Scented Bloom set](https://heavenlyplants.ae/products/scented-bloom-set).
