# Which houseplants should I avoid if I have a cat in the UAE?

**Short answer:** Avoid true lilies (dangerously toxic), and keep pothos, monstera, ZZ plant, snake plant, peace lily, aloe vera, eucalyptus, philodendron and dieffenbachia out of reach; these cause mouth irritation, drooling and vomiting if chewed. Safe alternatives include parlour palm, areca palm, calathea, spider plant, Boston fern, string of hearts and orchids.

Most popular houseplants are mildly to moderately toxic to cats rather than deadly: the calcium oxalate crystals in pothos, monstera, ZZ and peace lily irritate the mouth and stomach. True lilies (Lilium and Hemerocallis) are the exception and can cause kidney failure in cats even from pollen; do not keep them in a home with cats.
Cats climb, so 'out of reach' rarely works. If your cat chews plants, choose from our [pet-safe collection](https://heavenlyplants.ae/collections/pet-safe): [areca palm](https://heavenlyplants.ae/products/areca-palm), [spider plant](https://heavenlyplants.ae/products/spider-plant), [calathea](https://heavenlyplants.ae/products/calathea-orbifolia), [Boston fern](https://heavenlyplants.ae/products/boston-fern), [string of hearts](https://heavenlyplants.ae/products/string-of-hearts) and [orchids](https://heavenlyplants.ae/products/orchid-collection) are all listed as non-toxic to cats and dogs.
If a cat eats a toxic plant, remove plant material from the mouth, offer water, and call a vet; most UAE veterinary clinics have 24-hour lines. Keep the plant's name handy for the call. Every product page on our site states pet-safety clearly so you never have to guess.
