The red-purple form of fountain grass — same arching plumes as the green, but in burgundy, which is what you want when the grass has to read against a sand-coloured wall rather than a green hedge. Catches low evening light better than any other plant in the range. Drought-tolerant once rooted. Full sun (the colour fades in shade), water weekly, cut to the base each September.

UAE note: The burgundy colour only holds in full sun — in shade it reverts towards green, which defeats the point of choosing the red form.
