# Ruellia (Mexican petunia) care in the UAE

Ruellia in the UAE needs full sun to part shade, water every two days while establishing and twice weekly after, and a hard cut to the ground each February. It flowers violet-blue every morning from spring to late autumn, and spreads by runners and seed, so it needs edging twice a year.

## Care at a glance (UAE conditions)

- Watering: Every 2 days while establishing, then twice weekly
- Light: Full sun to part shade. Most flowers in full sun
- Temperature: 18-45°C. Cut back to the ground each February
- Humidity: No humidity requirement
- Soil: Any garden soil; tolerates poor ground and periodic wet
- Feeding: Light granular feed in October and again in March

Botanical name: Ruellia simplex. Mature height 60-90cm. Difficulty: very-easy. Watering every 4-6 days in an air-conditioned room, every 2-3 days outdoors May-September. Pet-safe: ASPCA lists it as non-toxic to cats and dogs.

UAE note: Opens a fresh set of violet-blue flowers every morning from spring to late autumn; cut the clump to the ground in February and it returns thicker.

## Planting and spacing

Plant 6–9 per square metre for a bed that closes within one growing season, or 4 per square metre if you can wait two. A 6-plant tray covers roughly 0.7–1 square metre at the faster spacing — measure the bed before ordering rather than buying a tray and hoping.
October to March is the right planting window. Ruellia planted in the cool season roots properly and flowers in its first spring; planted in June it spends three months surviving and needs water every day to do it.
It takes full sun or part shade. Full sun gives noticeably more flowers; part shade gives greener, taller growth with fewer blooms.

## Watering through the year

Every two days for the first month after planting, whatever the season. This establishment period is where most ground-cover plantings are lost in the UAE.
After that, twice weekly in summer and weekly from November to March. Ruellia tolerates periodic wet ground better than most UAE ground covers, so it is a reasonable choice for a low spot in a bed that stays damp after irrigation.
It wilts visibly when genuinely thirsty and recovers within hours of watering, which makes it a useful indicator plant for the bed around it.

## The February cut-back

Cut the whole clump to the ground in February. It looks drastic and it is the single thing that keeps ruellia looking like a designed planting rather than a thicket — the regrowth is denser, shorter and flowers harder.
Skip it for two years running and the clump becomes woody and open at the base, with flowers only at the tips. At that point the cut still works, but it takes a full season to look good again.
A light granular feed in October and again after the February cut is all the feeding it needs.

## Controlling the spread

Ruellia simplex spreads by underground runners and by seed, and in an irrigated UAE bed it will fill the space available. That is a feature when you want a bed massed, and a problem in a small formal border.
Edge it twice a year with a spade, and deadhead or shear before heavy seed set if it is near gravel or a lawn you want kept clear. Planting it inside a bed edged with hard landscaping makes control trivial.
It is non-toxic to cats and dogs, which makes it one of the safer mass-planting choices for a UAE garden with pets.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why do my ruellia flowers fall off every day?

They are meant to. Each ruellia flower lasts a single day and drops, with a fresh set opening the following morning. From spring to late autumn the turnover is continuous, so the plant always looks in flower unless you watch an individual bloom.

### Does ruellia survive a Dubai summer outdoors?

Yes — established ruellia flowers through the UAE summer on twice-weekly deep watering, in full sun or part shade. It is one of the few flowering ground covers that does not simply hold on until October.

### Can ruellia be grown in pots on a balcony?

Yes, and it is well suited to a large balcony pot or rail planter — the confinement also solves the spreading problem entirely. Water more often than in the ground: pots in UAE summer sun dry out within a day or two.
