# What are the best flowering trees for a UAE garden?

**Short answer:** The Flame Tree is the best flowering tree for a large UAE garden, with scarlet flowers from May to July. For a smaller plot choose the Hong Kong Orchid Tree, which tops out near 6m and flowers November to March. Near a driveway or pool, plant a Tabebuia — its roots stay well behaved.

Almost every flowering tree list written for the Gulf ranks by how the flowers look. That is the wrong first question. In a UAE villa garden the decisions that matter are: which month does it flower, how big does it actually get, and will the roots lift your driveway in six years.
The ranking below is ordered by how many gardens a tree suits, not by how spectacular it is at peak. Flame tree is first because it is the one people picture — but read the root note before you commit to it.

## The picks, in order

1. **Flame Tree (Delonix regia) — 30Ltr** (Delonix regia) — https://heavenlyplants.ae/products/delonix-flame-tree
The tree people mean when they say flame tree or gulmohar — six weeks of scarlet across May to July, and a wide flat canopy that shades a majlis properly. Do not plant it within 4m of a wall, pool deck or driveway slab: the shallow surface roots are the single most common cause of lifted paving in UAE villa gardens.
2. **Hong Kong Orchid Tree (Bauhinia)** (Bauhinia × blakeana) — https://heavenlyplants.ae/products/bauhinia-orchid-tree
The best choice for a normal-sized villa plot. It flowers mauve-purple November to March — precisely the months a UAE garden is used — and stops near 6m instead of 10-12. If you only have room for one flowering tree and you want to sit under it in February, this is it.
3. **Pink Trumpet Tree (Tabebuia) — 50Ltr** (Tabebuia rosea) — https://heavenlyplants.ae/products/tabebuia-trumpet-tree
Drops its leaves then flowers pink on bare wood for three to four weeks in spring, which is a genuinely different effect from everything else here. The reason municipalities line boulevards with it is root behaviour: it is the safest flowering tree to plant near hard landscaping. Buy it for the spring show, not for shade.
4. **Copperpod / Yellow Flame (Peltophorum)** (Peltophorum pterocarpum) — https://heavenlyplants.ae/products/peltophorum-copperpod
The pick when shade matters more than flowers. Dense fern-like foliage that holds through a Gulf summer, copper seed pods, yellow flower sprays, and real tolerance of coastal salt wind. Fast on irrigation. Choose this over a flame tree when you need reliable canopy and cannot risk the roots.
5. **Golden Shower Tree (Cassia)** (Cassia fistula) — https://heavenlyplants.ae/products/cassia-golden-shower
Hangs its yellow flowers in long chains rather than clusters, which nothing else in this list does. Supplied young, so it is priced as a shrub and grows into a tree. It widens before it heightens — allow 3m of clear ground, and keep the pods off the lawn if you have a dog that forages.
6. **Yellow Bells Tree (Tecoma stans) — 30Ltr** (Tecoma stans) — https://heavenlyplants.ae/products/tecoma-stans-yellow
The fastest to first flowering, and the only one on this list that often flowers in its first season. It makes a small upright tree of 3-5m, so it suits a courtyard or a boundary line. Cut it hard every September and it will carry yellow trumpets from October through spring.
7. **Frangipani (Plumeria)** (Plumeria rubra) — https://heavenlyplants.ae/products/frangipani
Not a shade tree — a sculptural, scented specimen for a terrace or a pot beside a pool. Flowers through the warm months and drops its leaves in winter, which surprises people who expect evergreen. Buy it for the perfume and the branch structure, not for canopy.
8. **Sea Hibiscus (Hibiscus tiliaceus)** (Hibiscus tiliaceus) — https://heavenlyplants.ae/products/hibiscus-tiliaceus
The coastal option. Heart-shaped leaves and flowers that open yellow and go bronze-red within one day, on a fast 4-6m tree that takes salt spray. If your plot is in Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah or on the Gulf coast and ornamentals keep failing, start here.

## Deliberately not picked

- **Jacaranda**: It is the tree everyone asks for after seeing photographs from Australia or South Africa. Jacaranda needs a genuine winter chill to flower reliably and does not get one in the UAE lowlands — you get a healthy green tree and almost no purple. We would rather not sell that disappointment.
- **Cherry blossom**: Requires hundreds of winter chill hours the UAE simply does not have. There is no cultivar that changes this, whatever an imported photograph suggests.
- **Royal Poinciana in a pot**: A flame tree can be kept in a large pot for a couple of years, but it will not flower properly until it is in the ground with room to run. If you only have a terrace, buy a frangipani or a tecoma instead.

## Frequently asked questions

### Which flowering tree grows fastest in the UAE?

Peltophorum and Tecoma stans are the fastest — both put on substantial growth in a single irrigated season. Flame tree is fast once established but spends its first year building roots. Tabebuia and bauhinia are the slowest of the group, which is part of why they behave better near paving.

### Do flowering trees in the UAE need a lot of water?

Only in year one. Deep water twice weekly through the first summer to drive roots down, then most of these trees drop to weekly or fortnightly. Frequent shallow watering is the common mistake — it keeps roots at the surface, which is exactly what lifts paving later.

### Can I plant a flowering tree in the UAE in summer?

You can, but October to March is far better. A tree planted in June spends its first months surviving rather than rooting, and needs water every two days to get through. Planting in the cool season gives it two seasons of root growth before it meets a Gulf summer.
